Can anyone help me make sense of this?
« on: July 07, 2005, 01:00 PM »
After saving a BMP file Photoshop CS crashed on me. Wouldn't close with task manager so closed down Windows XP and booted up again. Photoshop opens but will not close! Installed Photoshop over the top of existing installation - same problem. Uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled - same problem....  Other symptoms are - Not possible to move toolbox or palettes (ghosted area at top) -  Toolbox icons changes tools, but nothing works.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks, I forgot about Adobes' own forum. I'll send support an email, as well - you never know, they might reply.  I posted this here in exasperation.... I hope it's not bad form....

no, it's fine to ask here.
i was going to suggest you reboot - it sounded like one of those errors that happens when windows runs out of graphics "resources" which can happen if you have too many greedy programs running at same time, but you already tried that. if you have 256mb or less that could also be the cause.

another thing to definitely try, is somewhere there is a way to reset photoshop to its "default" settings, like holding control when you start it or something (i cant remember, search on web).  sometimes they suggest this when things go wrong.

troubleshooting photoshop freezes,etc:
http://www.adobe.com...techdocs/327946.html

step 4: " Re-create the Photoshop preferences file. "
would be something i would try - i know i had to do it once with an adobe product.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, Mouser.  Plenty of memory. I chose re-build preferences when I did a complete re-install.

Seems to have been one of those strange problems that cure themselves, eventually. I was closing and rebooting with Photoshop in minimized state. I tried the same with it fully open and that seemed to fix it, for now...... Odd!

Restored to Zen-like calm :)
