Why would anyone write free software?

(1/2) > >>

zridling:
Rosalyn Hunter starts us off with five good reasons to write free software. Because:

* they want software that they can't find;
* the software that they use isn't good enough;
* they want to benefit humankind;
* they want to prove that they can do it;
* they want to get back at Microsoft.

What are some others? As a non-programmer, I'm interested in knowing what motivates someone to make the effort.

mouser:
They want to learn how to do something new.
They want to practice.
They want to impress the girl who sits in the third row of the class.
They want to make something useful to others.

Josh:
The software they are using works, but not completely how they would want it to.

mouser:
The software they are using works, but not completely how they would want it to.

one thing you learn about programmer.. no program works perfectly.. sometimes the tiniest things can make you want to recode an application yourself..

"these two buttons are in the wrong location on the toolbar, i better program my own flight simulator.."

jgpaiva:
For me, another important issue is cooperation. Comercial software is usually a bit too unpersonal. Usually, freeware is a bit more interactive.
