i hope for that option too.
in the meanwhile, there's a work-around to justify (not center) your buttons.
just chose the "labels under icons" option and type in, like 5 spaces, depending on the length of ur bar, for every button.
trial and error until the last button is as close to the right edge as the first button is to the left.
if you decide to type in button labels just do the same:
[][][][][]media[][][][][]
[][][][][]internet[][][][][]
...

Off topic, I know, but this talk of aligning icons leads me to ask...
Does anyone know of a utility that will align and (more useful to me) distribute icons on the desktop? OS/2 used to have a great tool to do this. I want to select a range of icons and have the inter-icon spacing evenly distributed between the first and last. I'm seeking a utility that can do this horizontally and vertically.

I might have one group of icons whose spacing I want to be different from another. This I can achieve by placing them individually but I'd like a utility to do it quickly and accurately. Align to grid is going to affect everything. I appreciate the response, though--I should have been more specific when posting. |

cranioscopical, try typing "align icons" at google. there's a couple programs called "align icons" which install new align features to the right button context menu on the desktop. this is the most quickly and accurately you can get.
not sure if it does exactly what you want, tho.
to mouser, i found a bug concerning the docked bar.
the bar pic i posted was done on a 1280x1024 resolution screen in win xp. when i opened it in 1024x768 resolution in win2000 it only shows the first icon, like the image posted below.
now, it may be beacuse i used a lot of spaces in icon captions and the last icon got off screen.
doesn't it wrap automatically? and why doesn't it show all icons *but* the one who got cut off?
don't think the operating system matters.
can anyone confirm this? thanks.

try dragging the bar to make it a bit taller - lbc won't try to autosize itself for you to fit things - so it may be that you have 2 rows of icons now.

thanks mouser, you're absolutely right. i tried that before and i didn't think about it. no bug, i'm just dumb i think my workaround solution to justify the buttons fails because of the screen resolution changes. i guess i'll return to the floating mode with no additional spaces. |

They come and go, which is why I want some quick tool to align and distribute them. When I'm working for money (which is as seldom as I can manage  ) it's always to deadlines, and I generate quite a number of files that I must cross-reference and update. I find that the fastest way to track and access these is to dump shortcuts on the desktop. My habit is to place these along screen edges. When I do so, I want to 'group' icons for the same project, and that's best done by spacing between groups. Fortunately I have 3200x1600 pixels to play with. There probably are better ways to work, but habit and routine mean that this system does the job for me nicely. |

lanux128: oh, i see.. 3200x1600 is quite a size.. Until last year I was using big CRTs but, boy, did they take up some space, plus I could cook my breakfast on top of them!  Changing to decent LCDs was one of the better moves I've made. btw, for such a tool, you can try the modding sites.. i'll let you know if i find anything.. there are some desktop tools mentioned in this thread that you might want to have a look.. especially, Hawkeye ShellInit & Worktop.
Thanks, these seem more to control desktop areas than individual spacing of icons. I'll look closer |

cranioscopical, i think this is still not it but it has a lot of features. maybe you can find some useful. it's shareware, tho. http://www.idesksoft.com/[EDIT] i couldn't find any other solution without installing and testing. another half-solution you have is to increase vertical spacing and keep horizontal spacing, for example, so you can have separated horizontal groups of icons.
