[FREE] Packt Book of the Day

Free at Packt for the next ~15 hours as of this edit, you need to create an account - they also have other permanently free books, (eg. Python, R, etc).

^ That's a link.

Might help someone find out what their other half has been up to ...  :P

@4wd: Thanks for that link.
Interesting writeup on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Windows-PowerShell-Scripting-administrative/dp/1787126307
Looks like it could be a pretty useful and educational reference book.

Well, I assiduously tried to register on that website and get the free download of that book, but I was defeated by the unbeatable combination of an execrable webpage design and a Google Captcha. The page consistently failed in both Slimjet and IE.
Waste of time.

I used Puffin on my phone with no problems, throw-away gmail address, fake name.

Also worked a previous time using Vivaldi and Nada email address.

Just tried it now with another throw-away email, worked fine, (2 mins before deal expired).

What had to be allowed:
2018-11-19 10_58_56-Packt Publishing _ Technology Books, eBooks & Videos - Vivaldi.png[FREE] Packt Book of the Day

And TBH, didn't read any reviews, was more like: ooooo->Powershell->*FREE*->MINE!!!!

BTW, thinking about the sign up process, all three times I've done it I've had no ReCaptcha to play with:

Fill in details + Submit = access immediately (No ReCaptcha, no email verification, nothing)

And that's with uBlock Origin, uMatrix, Cookie AutoDelete, and a Hosts file that's ~500kB full of ad/analytics/malware/etc blocked domains.

Yeah... I got it easily also, and thanks for the notification!  There's a lot of other free books there also.

I've had a "Packt Free Learning" tab open in my browser since around 2014-2015 or so, and check it almost every day.

A somewhat recent change is that I do occasionally have to fill out a Re-Captcha when trying to claim a free book, even when logged in, and even though I have in the past purchased books using that account. But I've never had any trouble with any of it. Not sure why that happens, but it hasn't stopped me from getting any books I wanted.

Picked up Mastering Docker earlier this month, was trying to get to understand Docker and how to use it, and this ebook has been really good.

Just need to reconfigure my system to use Hyper-V instead of VirtualBox now ... needed a reinstall anyway  :D

Docker makes me sad. 70s UNIX tools wrapped in a gigantic binary file with a comic-style logo added on top of it, and suddenly it is "the next big thing". Bah, kids today.

Sounds like this thread needs to be renamed to something like [FREE] Packt Book of the Day.

Unless you don't mind updating the title to the current deal every so often. That sure is helpful. :D

Nah, just thought those that were interested in the Docker on Windows ebook might be interested in today's offering.

This might help: Web Alert  ;)

It might still be good to rename in case there's an offering that someone thinks would be good to put in here to bring people's attention to it.

This might help: Web Alert  ;)

Cool app!

At this point, it might be good to just do what Deo said, and just make this like the humble, steam, gog threads...

It seems Packt's free learning has had some changes this year.

Now there are free videos instead of just eBooks.
But more importantly, now it seems you don't get free downloadable eBooks anymore. You only get HTML access to the books. :'(

Any code examples are still downloadable but I've kind of stopped looking since having to read a book online is a P.I.T.A.

They do have a mobile app though that allows offline reading ... might look at that at some point, (but pretty useless unless I invest in a new tablet with Android 4.4+).

I've kind of stopped looking since having to read a book online is a P.I.T.A.

I've had a tab open to their free learning page and checked it almost daily for the past 4 years or so. (First order was from Dec. 2014.)

I think it's time to finally close that tab. . .
