Best of the Web...for the Average Joe
« on: August 07, 2006, 05:29 AM »
I am working on a little project...and you can help.

What I need is a collection of links representing the best sites you know of, that fit the following categories:

  • Forums (general interest...must be appealing to all types of people)
  • News (nothing too local)
  • Upload Services (things like yousendit.com and imageshack.us)
  • Tools (things like Babelfish)
  • Music (sites that have free streaming music or info on artists/albums)
  • Links (things like digg)
  • Games (things like pogo.com & neopets.com)
  • References (things like dictionary.com & wikipedia)
  • Blogs (general interest...not too techie)
  • Humor (family friendly and updated often with new content)
  • Security (good pc security sites for the average Joe)
  • Technology (you can get a bit more techie here)
  • Software (best download sites)
  • Kids (somewhere safe for children under 13)
  • Education (homework help sites covering a broad range of subjects)

Keep in mind that whatever links you submit have to appeal to the average person, be safe sites (no popups or spyware), family friendly, and not too technical.

Make sure you let me know what categories the sites fall into.

Care to share what this little project is for?   ;D
The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

url: http://nrrd.de/dasbuch/, which happens to be my site ;)

category: writing books
language: mostly German, then English; other languages are more than welcome
popups: none
spyware: none
family-friendly: yes, absolutely

description:
I want to build a community site where people write their books, or work together to write a book. So far I have two books and three active users. The books are far from being complete yet, but you can read them already as they are written in public. It is a supersmall community at the moment, I hope to see it grow. I really like the slogan we came up with: "Wer mitmacht, hat Recht!" which losely translates to "Participate, and be right!".

This is nothing new, but Das Buch has always been hadez' and my "baby" so to say. We put our hearts into making this site work. Blogging is also included, but that's more for buzzword compatibility. The focus of the site lies on writing books and getting them published eventuall. I chose this very open approach to get feedback as early as possible to improve the quality of a book before it goes to print.

Yes this is an attempt to get more visitors on my site!

I won't be too disappointed if my site is not included on said list, but I'll be glad if it is.
