Dr.Explain 2.0 released
« on: August 04, 2006, 04:47 AM »
Dr.Explain v.2.0 is a software documentation tool.

What is Dr.Explain:

It captures windows, dialogs, and forms from live application, makes screenshots, automatically adds references to all controls.
The program can produce CHM, RTF and HTML help files with interactive screenshots, menus, cross-references, and navigation.
Dr.Explain is easy to use and produces attractive and professional looking help files, that would otherwise take days to create manually.

What new benefits v.2.0 brings to you:

Let's name just a few:

 [Multi-tier document structure] - Create documents of any level of complexity.

 [Hyperlinks in descriptions / Cross-linking] - Link your help pages and create cross-references.

 [Spell checking] - No more typos.

 [Custom name for page files] - Name your pages.

 [New visual themes] - Adjust the document look easily.

 [Custom CSS setup] - Apply your corporate style to the document.

 [Intellectual orientation of bullets] - Dr.Explain arranges bullets the best way.

Hi Dennis,

Sounds like you added some really great stuff to the new version.

There's a nice screencast video showing one of the coolest features (automatic capturing of a window and labeling all it's controls for documentation): http://www.drexplain.com/live_demo/

And I see Dr.Explain has chm, rtf, and html web export as well, really nice.  Spellcheck - great!

One minor quibble, we should clear up however the "free copy" thing:
You may use the free unregistered copy of Dr.Explain software as long as you wish. With a free copy you may have only 5 pages per project. If you wish to document a serious application, then you must register Dr.Explain software to use all the benefits of the program.

Normal price is $125.

Just had a look at http://www.drexplain.com/live_demo/ - nice!!

Too bad I don't have a use for such a tool, but I sure was using programs that could have used it...

There is another very useful tool at Dr.Explain for people who are not experienced in authoring shareware or good at making help files:
http://www.drexplain...ftware-help-planner/
Although the page says this:
Please consider this amusing tool like a little joke that makes your life easier.
I think it is quite the opposite - it is a good solid starting point to your manual when you are wondering where to start. Often when you are writing the manual, your head is cluttered with a lot of important bugs you have fixed and so, if you are not trained in manual writing you could end up highlighting those areas of the program which took you maximum time or effort to fix. That may not be the best way to start writing a manual - for the manual *and for you*. So IMO, this tool  is *good*, however elementary it may seem.
