I dunno about where you are, but Bubble Tea became a Big Deal here (Winnipeg) 2 years ago and most of the Chinese/Viet restaurants offer it here - and it is a big part of their business (HUGE part of some) I've managed to sample most of the most-highly recommended places. Probably the most interesting factoid is that hardly any 2 people have the same favorite flavor. My daughter had like at least one a week the first year, partly because one of the best places was just around the corner from her school. Anyway, it has died down some, but definitely not a flash-in-the-pan thing.
It is what it is.

I need to go find one of these places. Sounds like a really interesting "taste sensation"!

I dunno about where you are...

FWIW I haven't heard about Bubble Tea until just now either.  But I'm only about 30 miles outside of New York City. I guess I just don't live in a very sophisticated or cosmopolitan area. we are not worthy....

Thanks for sharing KenR!

Sounds like it's not even tea, necessarily:

The Drink Components  TM  of bubble tea is made with 4 ingredients:

   1. Flavor:  Flavored powder, flavored syrup, fruit purees or fresh fruit
   2. Creamer:  Powder creamer, half-n-half, full milk or other creamer
   3. Sweetener:  Sugar, simple sugar syrup, fructose or honey
   4. Liquid:  Water, tea or milk

Tapioca Pearls or the "fun" stuff on the bottom add a new element to the bubble tea beverage.  Tapioca is distinctive, chewy and ultimately addicting. For an added twist, coconut meat can be added for a new flavor dimension.

Must be their answer to New York's famous Egg Cream.  A beverage unique in that it contains neither. ;D

<edit:> For those who are wondering, here's a link to show you how to make a genuine NYC Egg Cream:

http://www.jaykeller...cooking/eggcream.htm

Do not be fooled by imitations. This is the real deal.

(BTW: There is only one factual error in the above link - it relates to the question about whether or not it is essential to use Fox's U-Bet chocolate syrup. This is not a topic for debate. U-Bet is absolutely essential. Period.

so what's the score here, pushing addictive substances on dc :D

Sounds like the're all sweet :( - but it does sound like it could make a very good savoury drink (I like my chocolate sweet but not drinks)

p.s. moderater, I'm very disappointed my anti-bubble-tea-spam post was removed -  :P
it's not often I get a chance to make a post like that !
