vmware workstation with agnitum outpost firewall rules?

(1/2) > >>

nudone:
forgive me for not asking the makers of vmware workstation 5 for the solution to this problem - i just thought it might be simpler to ask the users around here that use this virtual operating system prog in conjunction with 'agnitum outpost'.

i thought i knew what i was doing when it came to setting up port access and restrictions with firewalls but it seems not.

the problem is i can get my virtual machines to access the network only if i use 'outpost' in the 'allow most' policy. i would prefer to use it with the 'rules wizard' policy as that is how i normally have things running.

i've pretty much got all the vmware files set to unrestricted access through the firewall and i thought i had the net bios settings set right. i'm obviously missing something or, quite likely, several things that need configuring.

any tips would be greatly appreciated.

mouser:
i might be able to help with this.

i have vmware running with agnitum well, in the normal Rules mode.

here is what i had to do:
In agnitum options, System tab, Rules:
I added a RULE that said to allow all traffic in and out from the particular ip that my vmware runs as
(ie on my lan its 192.168.0.5).

note that this is not an APPLICATION RULE, but rather a SYSTEM RULE.

this works perfectly and everything else stays tight as a drum (note that you can also run an independent firewall on the virtual operating system to block incoming and outgoing traffic from WITHIN the vmware).

one caveat:
in the past (haven't checked recently), i had to DISABLE this system rule when i tried things like running an ftp server on my main machine.  just something to be aware of if you have troubles in this regard.

nudone:
ha, ha, excellent.

works fine now.

i was sort of hoping that you would have figured that one out, mouser, as i knew you used outpost and vmware.

thanks for that - i can carry on with the graphics review now.

Dealing with VMware networking under a host system messes with your head, no?  (It confuses me sometimes, but then again I average 2 hours of sleep per day.)
