What are your favorite RSS Feeds?
« on: July 21, 2006, 02:47 PM »
KPR asked people to post their favorite RSS feeds, but due to an evil downloader tool, the thread was deleted.
I hearby repost the rss feeds people suggested and reinstate the thread from a backup.  Rather then restore the missing posts verbatim i will just post the summaries.

I am finally going to post my list of feeds.

Unfortunately, it's not an .opml file (sorry).
My reader is part of my browser and doesn't have that. I had a tough time finding the file with the list. It was stored in a file called 'screensaver.xml'.

Sorry these don't have many descriptions, but my news reader is a continuous list of feed sites. Sometimes the name is an indicator of what it's about...sometimes not. All I can say is try them out and keep what you like. A lot of these have been recently added to my list as I just started getting back into feeds, now that I have a browser that I like that has a built in feed reader. I start at the top and work my way down every few hours.

by the way, what seems to have caused the problem is a spider following all the links on a page - apparently one of the paths of links was deleting stuff.  it's a good lesson if you are a developer coding a web app - to be very cautious not to use LINKS to perform actions like deleting stuff (always use a form).  otherwise if a spider hits your site... bye bye data.

Here are some of my favorite feeds. Like everyone else, I have a very large number of feeds that I am not able to follow closely. Those on this list, however, tend to be pretty manageable.

Want your news and information delivered to you so you don't need to get it yourself?

That's what RSS is great for - all you have to do is get a RSS reader (most are free), subscribe to the RSS feeds (the information) that you want (typically done by clicking a link on a website), and the RSS reader will get the information for you. Then all the information is collected for you and is typically stored on your computer so you can read it offline. If you're not familiar with RSS, now is the time to learn!

There are many RSS readers and almost all of them are free. Although they vary in features and how they present the information, they all serve the same basic function of obtaining and showing you the information that you want. Various RSS readers have been discussed in the DonationCoder forum and this would be a great place to find out which ones people like and use.

A file containing hundreds of RSS feeds on many topics is attached. You should be able to import the feeds contained in this file into most RSS readers. This file was created by putting together RSS feeds contributed by DonationCoder members, particularly app103, Carol Haynes, Housetier, Josh, and KenR. It will be helpful to anyone who is just getting started or is already using an RSS reader, but would like to obtain some additional feeds. (WARNING: Some of these feeds might contain offensive information!).

Remember, the best feeds are going to be from the sites you already visit and enjoy. Look around on sites you browse for a small orange square with a dot and two lines Screenshot - 7_23_2006 , 12_37_20 PM.png. Depending on your web browser, it may be in the address bar for the site as well as the page itself. Click this square and it will give you information about setting of a feed for that site.

Have fun!
KenR

lol  when I imported that opml, my feed reader showed about 7100 unread "news". To quote from a very funny movie:
That's a lot of nuts!
I am sure I won't keep all of them, but there might be some pearls in that chest.

Hey Housetier,

I hope you do find some pearls. If you do find some that you particularly like, please let us know. It's a fantastic database and probably has stuff for everyone.

I just talked Paul Lutus, author of Arachnophilia and the brains behind arachnoid.com, to add a feed to his site so we can all know when he writes a new essay.  :D

Okay, I did it. I added an RSS feed to my site. It is located at
http://www.arachnoid.com/feed.xml.

I hope people won't be too disappointed when it doesn't change content
on a daily, or even weekly, basis. My first impression has been
confirmed -- most RSS feeds are on fast-moving sites, and blogs, that
update content regularly.

I want to thank you for telling me about this. I knew RSS existed, but I
just hadn't thought very much about it. Please feel free to offer any
suggestions you may have about the content of my feed.

Thanks again!

I haven't really looked much into rss feeds..
All I know is that some times when I'm bored I get engadget feeds on my se w810, and have a read thru.

Mine are mostly just video games.

Kotaku, Joystiq, 4 Color Rebellion, some blogs of my friends, Creating Passionate Users, and DevBump.

Ars Technica or Daily Tech. I would also mention any of the tech blogs around the net, but they're too centered in gadgets.

Strictly science... Popular Technology?

I have a quite long list of feeds... RSSOwl screenie:

Most of them are in German, though. My favorites right now are The Oatmeal (nerd jokes  :D), the FAIL Blog (just for the lolz) and Fefes Blog (because I like political conspiration theories). Some things like Daily Garfield and xkcd.com are saved as my start pages, so I don't have them as RSS... saves some space.

If anyone is actually interested, here's the OPML file:
