Looking for a new browser
« on: April 05, 2017, 09:54 AM »
Hi,

My time with Firefox is nearly over (v57 is on the horizon)...

I don't want to share my data with google so Chrome itself is off the table

Is there a browser that is/has/can do/supports

- Respects my privacy
- 100% portable (Windows)
- Fast (no 64-bit necessary)
- Lean, uncluttered interface
- Addon support
- All necessary audio + video codecs
- Maybe based on the blink engine

Last time I tried Chromium (more than one year ago) it
was lacking support for (mainly) video codecs and I guess
that didn't change...

Is there a perfect Chrome derivative that supports all these wishes?

My piece of advice on the matter is to use firefox ESR for a year, and then to move on to Opera.

It may be worth looking into Brave (also kind of discussed here). It doesn't quite do everything in your list (not portable AFAIK, few addons, etc.), but it's designed with respecting privacy in mind and it seems lean, uncluttered, and fast.

Spotted Epicbrowser for the 1st time from a disgruntled user commenting on Ghacks.
Seems to have all the prerequisites posted here.

I moved from Firefox to Pale Moon several years ago and have been very happy with that decision.  Originally based largely on Firefox, Pale Moon gives me many of the features I valued in Firefox without the sometimes senseless changes that made Firefox increasingly disappointing.

Not to sidetrack...but remind me what's wrong with v57?

Extensions, I think.  Many popular ones will stop working because of changes.

I don't use a lot of the extensions mentioned in the 2 links wraith provided, but FWIW, I thought I'd mention the extensions  (not plug-ins) I've currently got on Pale Moon, most of which I also had when I used Firefox:

Adblock Latitude (a Pale Moon version of Adblock)
Better Privacy
Cookie Culler
Download Manager
EPUB Reader
Flashblock
Google Translator
Last Pass
Lazarus
Linkman Fox
Surfulater Integration (I'll probably remove this soon, since the developer is no longer working on Surfulater)
Tiny URL generator

Even if they no longer work on Firefox, they'll continue to do so on Pale Moon, though it may become harder to find some of them.

Ah! Okay... That's fine I don't use extensions. Just as long as it's not yet another horrific privacy issue, I'll plan on continuing to use it then.

Thanks guys, I'll be quiet now ... Carry on..

Pale Moon users should probably install FEBE 8.3.1, CLEO 6.0.2, and OPIE 5.0.2.1, just in case, so they don't ever end up in a situation where they lose access to installing their favorite add-ons, after the Firefox change.

The problem with the browser market of 2017 is that it's basically a choice between bloat Gecko or bloat Webkit. Pale Moon and SeaMonkey are your (and my) obvious options here unless we're interested in a giant waste of resources. Chrome-based browsers like Vivaldi are awful in this concern.

However, when it comes to a small and fast UI without clutter and you are fine with typing instead of clicking, qutebrowser might be another option:

Also, insert my usual rant about the stupidity that Mozilla has become here.

Sorry, but which rant is that? I am not sure, there are so many. If you inserted it in a "Spoiler" thingy, it would help - then those of us who wanted to could read it and compare it with our own Mozilla rants and see if we (or you) had missed any rant points out about Mozilla. That could be quite a fun thing to do and would keep us on our mettle and lift the game across the whole forum - no sloppy critiquing here!
I think I had a set of 58½ rant points last time I checked, but some of those were arguably duplicates - i.e., same general meaning/intent, but just using different words. I had intended to put some time aside to sit down and rationalise the list at some point, but this (your rant) could be the stimulus I needed to do just that.

Thanks, app103, for these suggestions.  Can they be installed only when/if I find I need them, or do they have to be installed before they're needed?

Sorry, I was joking. Yes, I know that rant. I have the same rant. Actually, they've arguably not quite killed it off, but they do seem to be very busy killing it at present. Or maybe we haven't all figured out (or don't want to see it) that they have already killed it off?
Either way, I jumped ship a while back.

You need to install them and run them to make a backup of your current everything, before you need it, not after you lose everything. Then keep the files in a safe place, so you don't lose them should your hard drive die. Because it would be rather pointless to make a backup and then lose both your current Pale Moon and your backups to the same mishap.
