Norton antivirus false alarm

(1/1)

mouser:
there is a known false alarm about a virus in mircryption full pack.

first things first:
it is a known false positive, and norton seems to be the only
antivirus that is upset about the file (stdio).  email to norton to
get them to correct their database to not false alarm on this file
have been unheeded.

however, it's an
optional file (stdio.mrc) that it not used in a normal install.
its only used if you want to run the mcboard addon to mircryption from
your local mirc (instead of using an eggdrop bot).  in other words
only .01% of people would ever use this file.

so, i really need to just remove it from the setup and re-upload a
version without it and tell people where they can download this file
if they want to use it.

the mircryption .exe setup files are purposefully made to be zip
compatible.  so if you like you can open the .exe in any zip program
like winzip and extract the files and you will see that norton is only
mad about that one useless file which you can just let norton delete.

it's LONG overdue that i upload a new version of the setup packages, and leave out this file, etc.
i will do it this weekend.

sorry for any worries.

JeW:
I've just read about Mircryption Suite and I liked it very much. So I decided to try it out. When I tried to install it, during installation it detected a virus called 'IRC.flooder' by my Zone Alarm Security Suite, which was automatically treated and removed. After that, I did not continue with the installation. Can someone or the creator/creators of this program please explain to me why ZA detected a virus? I thought your program was safe to use, but I guess not.

mouser:
It's an unfortunate reality that antivirus programs tend to false alarm on irc scripts.
There is no virus or "IRC.flooder" in mircryption.

The best way to prove this to yourself is to not run the installer but just download the setup program and open it in winzip or any zip compatible program and extract the files manually.  Then have your antivirus programs scan it and examine the files it says have the flooder thing - usually you can see yourself there is nothing bad about it.

Thanks for posting and letting us know about this - it's the first i've heard about this specific issue.  But please keep in mind that it's not so unusual for antivirus programs to falsely identify something as a virus when it's not.

The following two lines sum it up:
Norton = suck
ZoneAlarm = suck
