'deskview' wasn't actually the program i was thinking of but i can see that it does the job so that's good.

i'm sure someone will know the name of the other one (might not be freeware). i remember that you could save different icon layouts and and there were a few other options too - like you could 'zigzag' the icons across the screen.

i think we've even discussed it on the forum - i can't remember why i stopped using it - might have had a strange side effect or conflict.

anyone know what it is?
