Within A Deep Forest - oldschool game
« on: July 06, 2006, 03:58:47 PM »
The same friend that pointed me to Armadillo Run now guided me to http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/ . It's a great oldschool type of platform game with simple but beautiful and cute graphics, great atmospheric background music, cute sound effects, and a simple enjoyable gameplay.

Warning: you can waste a LOT of time on this :-*

I completed the game a bit earlier today - it's been one of the better experiences in a long while. It might sound totally whacked out, but I'm rating it up near Half-Life 2. Obviously it's in a completely different league, but I had at least as much fun playing this as HL2 - which says a lot! I guess I really miss well-done retro games :)  :-*  :-*  :-*

i'm almost done.. have everything but last ball.
as eoin says, it is tough and frustrating at times, but very compelling and very very well balanced game which keeps you playing to see what's next.

I downloaded this in the summer when I had no internet connection at home and e-mailed it to myself and then forgot what it was because I had saved it as WADF. Finally played it and it is absolutely charming! I'm not very far, but I love all the little creatures that add to the personality and life of the game. Not just the enemies, but especially the ones that don't affect the game. The little villagers in the tutorial level, the caterpillar that follows you, the little blobby thing that peeks up from a platform like it's scared of what's going on. Even on the menu screen there are things that fly around and butterflies and everything.

It creates such a greater level of immersion. Like this fantasy world actually exists. It's so fun! And the best thing about it is that the graphics are so very simple.

deozaan be carefull, this game can take weeks to complete and you have to be working on programming your game, not playing this one!

I haven't played it since I heard about the Jay is Games contest. :) I just wanted to tell everyone how impressed I was by it in my short play time yesterday.

Hi, reviving a old thread I know but I thought this was relevant- A new game, Knytt, from the creator(s) of WaDF has been released recently. It's not at all on the scale of WaDF but is still very atmospheric and a pleasure to play.

Knytt v1.0.1

Oooooh, nice!

Thanks for letting us know. I'll have to try not getting sucked into this after work, or I'll never get to bed ^_^

Thanks for the link and info. I absolutely love this sort of game. Especially since I don't need to read a 200-page manual to play it.

Now if somebody could just port M.U.L.E. so I could finally retire my old Commodore-64 I'd be a truly happy man. (C64 emulators are all well and good, but nothing matches the feel of the original hardware.)

have you tried space h.o.r.s.e. ? I hear it's a m.u.l.e. evolution. I never played mule so i cannot say whether it is an improvement or they ruin it etc. but I had fun with that game a while back when it came out

...have you tried...

Nope.

Didn't even know such a thing existed.

Thanks for all the links.  :-* I'll have to give them a shot soon as I get this client project I'm working on off my desk...
