What website has the fewest files?
« on: June 01, 2016, 01:14 PM »
Hi Folks,
I'm somewhat techy, but website building is something I know very little about...  Years ago, I got a lifetime membership to NoNags.com.  It includes a free (though small) place for hosting a website.  Over the years I've used several different ones.  Remember Geocities?  LOL.  There was also a nice freebie from Microsoft, but they discontinued the service.  Google has one, but whenever I get involved with a Google thing, they bloody discontinue it.  Anyway, NoNags is still going strong.  In the past I used WebsiteX5 (shows up free on the interwebs every now and then).  Now though, it appears that NoNags does not support FTP uploading, which is what WebsiteX5 uses.  I can upload the individual files to NoNags, but for even the smallest site (3 different pages) there are 71 different files and folders that need to be individually uploaded!  That's not really feasible.

So the question:  What free tool can I use that will generate the fewest resource files?  I don't mind having a one-page site, if that makes things smaller...
Ideas?

Notepad. It will generate help you to "generate" exactly one file.

Whyever you would even need more than one.

Notepad++ / SublimeText :-)

I also really wouldn't recommend using free hosting unless your site isn't very important to you. Remember the good old saying that if you're not paying, you're the product, not the customer.

Whoops, missed that one - SublimeText is worth its pretty low pricetag, though.

Beats me...  Like I said...  Not too website-savvy.
I'm guessing that with the above-mentioned WebsiteX5 scenario, many of the 71 files are not even used.  Probably just default stuff generated by the application.

I guess I could probably upload a plain txt file...  But that would be pretty boring.  I'd like to at least put my mug there.  Here's the current one (buggy)

The x-ray picture is fun, right?   No though, there isn't anything important on the site.  Just fun stuff.  :)

Anyway, thanks for the replies.  It actually occurred to me that Word can save files as HTML... I might mess around with that.

It generates some very bad HTML.

Perhaps you might be better off using a CMS instead of generating HTML files? But your link is 404, so I we can't see what your current stuff is like :)

Apparently you're right...  I uploaded all the parts of the Word-generated one, but it won't open..  "Access denied."

That's because you'll need to make it readable for the web server. But, still, please don't. It's horrible.

You spoiled the web with another badly written, useless website. Congratulations.

Learn HTML and stop being a dickhead.

Hey not cool.  You made me LOL in a staff meeting and everyone now suspects that I'm off-task...

EDIT:   What about    http://kompozer.net ?

"HTML generators suck!" "OK, what about this HTML generator?"
Seriously: Dickhead.

If you can't write HTML, you might consider to use Markdown instead.
Or just stop annoying us and learn HTML.

"Not cool".
Very fitting for this thread.

There's only one dickhead in this thread.

Tux: I am certain we have discussed this before. This stops now. There is no need for attacks and posts that aren't helping out site members. Future comments will be removed if they continue this line of posting.

There's not much helping him more than pointing out that the way he wants to do it makes most people mad at him.

(Pfff, -5 points. Who's not helpful here?)

There are proper ways to help point that out. There is no need to be rude or insulting. I am positive that is not the mindset we want here. Productivity is not spurred by that type of talk.

The mindset is "Oh, a guy with a problem. Let's spend some time on talking about the guy with the only helpful (if a little less friendly though) answers instead of helping him ourselves", obviously.
Go on!  8)

Tux, Your advice to not use MS Word was good advice, but rather than explaining why you soon resorted to calling people names.  We don't do that kind of thing here, please respect that.
Let us now resume helpful advice mode.

Kunkel, to elaborate on what people have said -- you really do not want to export HTML from MS Word because it will generate very convoluted html code that will be very hard to maintain and edit in the future.  It would be far better to use a tool that will generate clean simple html.

at the risk of poking the bear, so far all I'm seeing is people telling him not do something, but nothing that actually points him at anything useful or helpful

There are many (many!) useful tools and resources available (for free!) and rather than pointing out the obvious (which the OP freely admitted to) how about making some useful recommendations

I'm not recommending any of these, they're just some of the results from a google search for HTML tutes (though the W3schools are probably a no brainer)

intro to html - http://www.w3schools.../html/html_intro.asp
HTML tutorial - http://www.w3schools.com/html/
HTML beginner tutorial - http://htmldog.com/guides/html/beginner/
HTML tutorial - http://www.tutorialspoint.com/html/

As already noted you don't need any fancy tools to do this stuff, any text editor will do, though most decent editors will include syntax highlighting that might make things easier for you

There are also a couple of good online HTML generators.

https://html-online.com/editor/
http://www.quackit.c.../online-html-editor/

And a good reference that has specific references to codes and such for beginners.

http://www.html.am/

If you're making a simple one page site, if you send me the text I can mark it up into a simple file.

Thanks all, for the replies.
In all fairness to Tux, I do have to point out that I baited him a bit.   :P  No offense taken, really.

There's some paradox with writing my own HTML.  I my well go down that path, but as I'm learning, won't I be producing some junky code?  And if my whole thing is to use it on my site...  Well you get the idea.
