New feature added to the forum: "My Personal Area"
« on: July 06, 2006, 09:27 AM »
I wrote a little mod extension to the forum today to add a special new section called "My Personal Area".
It's on the main index near the bottom.

In this section you can post whatever you want and ONLY YOU will see your posts.

In other words, in that section, each person sees only their own posts.

It should be useful for testing, keeping notes, and writing drafts of posts that you plan to post later.

It will also be useful in our upcoming mini cms, because authors can write articles in that private section for editing, until they are ready to go public.

note: when i say no one can see the posts you make in that personal area except you,
keep in mind that admins of the site (me, brotherS, carolh, jgpaiava) can - so don't use it for passwords, etc.

Nice idea - any chance it could be added to the forum button bar? ("Profile and Membership" could be reduced to "My Profile" to make space)

This is a fun idea. It's really useful to make drafts of big posts. Good idea!
I also support Carol's idea, it could be added to the top bar, or to the profile editing itself.

(BTW... Who's "jgpaiava"? :P)

I am probably just too tired, but I cannot find this section. Can someone take a screenshot and circle the area where I have to look?

Yes indeed I see it now.

Thanks jgpaiva and dB

I didn't know it was a special forum. I guess I didn't read mouser's post carefully enough.

Can we give ourselves donation credits for well-planned posts? :D

Is there a way to do the following with a post added to one's personal area?  I'm stumped -- hopefully I'm just missing obvious things.

1. Delete it
2. After drafting it, choose to start a new topic -- without a copy/paste of the draft content -- i.e. specify which forum it is supposed to appear in from the "My Personal Area" section
3. After drafting it, choose to reply to a particular post -- without a copy/paste of the draft content -- i.e. specify which post it's a reply to

Alternatively, is there a way to leverage the personal area space from the ordinary posting area and have the forum to post to (or post to reply to) be remembered along w/ the draft and then later when finished with the draft be able to specify that it should be posted to the appropriate (remembered) "location"?

I think mouser said a while ago he planned to add those features (or at least, deletion and moving it to any section of the forum), but we're still waiting... ;D

it can't currently be done.. deleting could be added easily.. moving is harder.
of course you can always ask me to move a post from personal area to another forum section (one drawback is that the date is set to the original date when the post was first made in the personal area section).
