If the holy trinity (PotPlayer, VideoLAN or Media Plyer Classic) doesn't play a video...that video wasn't meant to be seen.  ;)

Seriously, who installs the quicktime garbage on Windows anymore?

You don't *have* to install QuickTime with itunes.  I have itunes and no quicktime.  But it's checked by default.  And you have to keep unchecking it.

Is this just their way of lashing out at Apple for not cooperating before?

Yes, but IIRC they kept squirting it back in with every other "update" just in case you ~like~ "forgot" to install it before...

Oh yeah, I do rather remember that. And the repeated unchecking made me think it really did have to be installed. But even if QT isn't required, I have many other reasons to hate iTunes  ;)

It's just easier to use iDevices with iTunes, so I don't fight that needless battle.  ;D

I must say my mom loved to watch iClaudius.  Myself, I only employ the iDivide and iConquer techniques when iDebugging.  :)

I tried (and am trying) the Android ecosystem.  I still prefer my iPhone and iPad.  Got rid of the Mac- that's mostly propaganda, IMO.  But the iDevices to me are better, even for their annoyances.

I have many other reasons to hate iTunes  ;)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! That piece of software drives me mad every time I have to deal with it.

I just don't understand the logic by which its features and menus are organised or why it works the way it does...

But it might just be that I don't fit their user profile. Still, I'm curious what the logic behind it is, if there is one.

Or is it just features piled upon features over time, without much care for making it user-friendly?

You have to look at it as a Mac user.  Then see itunes as a Windows program designed with mac aesthetics.  Then it makes sense.  Sort of.

IMO most Android manufacturers ruin the Android experience by adding their little custom hooks and things into Android. Vanilla Android is pretty sweet. But some of the most popular Android devices (Samsung anything) run a customized version of Android, which has lots of little things about it that annoy me. I wish they'd cut it out and let people experience Android as it was meant to be experienced. But then again, that may just be down to "what I'm used to" in Android.

And this is getting off topic, so I'll stop there.

Perhaps we should make a different thread, and you can put your reasons and such there, and I can put my experiences.  I don't think your experience with Samsung is what I'm seeing.  Comparing my experience and pros and cons with the nexus (which a friend has) shows me that the pain points have little to nothing to do with the Samsung customizations.

Nope, it's because QT is a steaming pile of buggy code :)

Yeah, once I thought my pc might have a virus, but it was only a head code.

Okay, I uninstalled QT (which BTW helps reduce overload on my 100GB HD & 2GB ram laptop), but now WMP won't play mp3's and mp4's, whereas VLC plays them, but I can find no way to minimize VLC either to partial screen or to systray (the lower right mini-icon row), and it hogs the whole screen.

The thing to do used to be use Quicktime Alternative.  But I see they changed the name to QT Lite and the last version, 4.10 was released in 2010.  In such a case I would recommend trying various players that come with their own local libraries for QuickTime playback.

You can find a bunch here:
http://www.videohelp.com/

Also there are many video forums.  I haven't messed with video in almost 4 years so my info is obsolete.  There is a database on that site where you can specify what formats you want the player to handle and it brings up all matches.

For video playing, go grab mpc-hc and never look back - you won't need to mess around with dodgy codec packs.

It also plays audio, but I prefer something more focused for that.

PotPloyer, my personal favorite videoplayer (and part the "trinity"), does play audio and it reduces the size of it's window considerably to show you the necessary buttons and info about the track currently playing.

Having said that, fOdder's recommendation to play audio is better. Some like their tools to include "everything and the kitchen sink", some like tools that do one job and do it well.

Try out any of the "trinity" of video-players, you hardly go wrong with any. Each of them do not require you to install codecs at all to play video's or audio, no matter the format of the video/audio file. Personally I enjoy using the foobar2000 music player, mainly because it sounds excellent, but it also gives you options to add plug-ins to complement the already available tools and you can change its interface to how you like it.

[Windows Key + D] ('Minimize all') forces VLC to minimize to Desktop.

sometimes other software needs quicktime installed to work.
