ACDSee - the best image viewer for large files
« on: July 02, 2006, 01:29 AM »
my computer has 1GB of RAM, pagefile is off.

the image i was trying to view/open:
type: .tif file
size: 75 MB
image properties: 61803x7200x32b

(if you like to try, this is the image in rar (yousendit link)

i tried a lot of image viewers, nothing worked even when i turned on the page file to 4GB, most of the viewers just freeze.

ACDSee (version 5 and above) opened the image beautifully even with pagefile off , mem usage increased from 30MB++ to 130MB++ and then dropped back to 45MB when the image is opened.

so amazing, big thumb ups to ACDSee.

edit: fix link.

"Internal error, please try again later" on the download link. I've found that XnView opens up lots of images that are larger than a lot of other apps will do, actually. I wouldn't be surprised if ACDSee is a bit better still, but XnView isn't too shabby. :D I've opened up 300MB+ image files with it.

@JavaJones
sorry, link fixed.
yes XnView is not that bad, at least it can display the image in thumbnail.

yes, my favorite viewer irfanview simply freezes.

ACDSee is the king for large files.

Interesting. Doesn't load from the downloaded file but I can open in Photoshop (1GB memory used) and convert to RGB (from CMYK) and re-save as tif and then it opens in XnView. So I'm guessing it's not really a memory issue. It's using 1.3GB once it's open though. I find it a bit hard to believe ACDSee is really only using 45MB once it's done loading! The image itself is 1.3GB without compression so unless ACDSee is decompressing an image of this size on the fly (which would be a real feat) I don't know it could be doing that.

this is slightly off topic, but speaking of big images, those computer generated images in your gallery are incredible oshyan.  you REALLY need to tell us about the program you are using one of these days.  maybe make a screencast of it in action or something.  really beautiful.

Thanks! I keep meaning to get around to that, hehe. There's even a freeware version, so it's very appropriate. :)

adobe bridge only displays a thumbnail of the file - which i suspect is embedded in the original file anyway.

Yeah, that was my assumption on the thumbnail as well.

JPEG files don't have embeded thumbnails - and only some RAW types have them. Unless Bridge adds a thumbnail to the file I can't see how it can be working like that?

Having said that most Adobe software uses scratch files (presumably instead of or as well as any available page file).

Sorry didn't read the whole thread ... Do all TIF files have thumbnails included? I suppose if they do it makes sense for them to be used.

i would guess they do but i really have no idea. i had a quick look in photoshop to see if there was a choice to include an embedded thumbnail but it either does it automatically or this is just how tiff files work???????????????????

Tiff is actually one of the least standardized formats around so there is very little of that "just how tiff works" sort of thing. :D But I do believe it can have embedded thumbnails.

i think they can as part of the metadata stuff (iptc or whatever). well, it looked like that was the answer during a 5 second search on google - i didn't investigate further than that.
