My query did not give the wanted result at first, so I've renamed ("Get paid") the thread.
However, it seems my search all along was based on false memory.
---------------------------------- original post:

In the early 1980s I had an already very old record with the wonderful number Cool Water (written by Bob Noland in 1936). I praised it too much, so I lost it..., and now I really miss it, because in my mind this particular version was better than any other of the many versions there are.

The version I am seeking is "basically" a (black, vocal) version of these:

Sons Of The Pioneers: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=WDtCa8ZgAk4
Hank Williams: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=s5ywIVBBt-Y
Burl Ives: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=qtxqFZbyzS0
Frankie Laine: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=2jj7qab6KC4
The Rooftop Singers: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=yJ_HefidQpk
Melody Master's Quartet: not available

However:
> It was not performed by white men, but definitely by 3 or 4 "old" Afro American male singers only. In my memory it was a quartet, but it might 'merely' have been a trio.

> and I feel certain it was a cappella / Barbershop style, because I cannot remember any instrumental sounds
Eh... regarding "Barbershop": not the notice me, I am impressive -style, but four old negro church singers discretely giving their best -style.

> I also imagine it was running 16 rpm or 78 rpm. I think it was too old for 45 or 33 rpm (I think it was a single)!?

I will of course be pleased if it turns out to be on the Internet, even YouTube, but I have searched so often, that if it's there, it's most likely misnamed.

If you know about this record, I am of course ready to pay to have it mailed to me, please, or to have a digital copy, if possible.

 :tellme:

Sons Of The Pioneers - Cool Water Lyrics

All day I face the barren waste without the taste of water,
Cool water.
Old Dan and I with throats burned dry and souls that cry for water,
Cool water.

The night are cool and I'm a fool each stars a pool of water,
Cool water.
But with the dawn I'll wake and yawn and carry on to water,
Cool water.

(Chorus)
Keep a movin' Dan, don't you listen to him Dan, he's a devil not a man
and he spreads the burnin' sand with water.
Dan can't you see that big green tree where the waters runnin' free
and it's waiting there for me and you.
Water, cool water.

The shadows sway and seem to say tonight we pray for water,
Cool water.
And way up there He'll hear our prayer and show us where there's water,
Cool Water.

Dan's feet are sore he's yearning for just one thing more than water,
Cool water.
Like me, I guess, he'd like to rest where there's no quest for water,
Cool water.

For your info: "Old Dan" is a donkey.

Some other renditions:

Prairie Fire (capella): https://www.youtube..../watch?v=SjApCW2Zkp4
Montana A Capella Society: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=7RBJMGITXYI
Gaither Vocal Band: http://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=0F9M9JNU
Land of Legend: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=76qR1W9kJjU

Heart of Texas Chorus performing Cool Water (guitar backing): http://206.180.232.4...lips/ra/CoolWater.rm
(The above is a direct link to the RealMedia file which is a sample from the first album on the page, (playable in MPC-HC, MPC-BE, etc) ~420kB.

There's also a version available from iTunes, you can hear a 30sec sample of it here.

Can't find anything like you're looking for though.

^ thanks, 4wd.

However, you can HEAR they all were made by white people...
and that is why I am asking especially for this "black" version.
So the search is still on
Anyone?  :tellme:

bumping for result! My query has not yet succeeded, so I have renamed ("Get paid") the thread:

I guess they wouldn't have been too old though, back in the 50s.

Wow, I have visited the Bob Nolan site before, but how did I miss the Cool Water page?!!  :-[
I knew there were many versions, but I surely didn't know the number is higher than 180!!  :o

Thanks a lot, ayryq   it can now take quite some time to check out this many versions...

I think I listened to at least the beginning of all them, and I'm pretty sure that none of them are a capella. However it is obvious that many are recordings from old records, which is at least hopeful.

Get disappointed if you find this old version of Cool Water
« Reply #10 on: September 16, 2015, 03:42 AM »
There is an old saying that you should never meet your (childhood?) heroes; you will only be disappointed. I think this thread is an example. The track, it appears, was not a capella or barbershop, in fact the MUSIC was quite terrible! Everything was wrong with this track. Their voices were different from my memory - and this version doesn't even have a proper ending! How can it be this? Please find me the right track!

Disappointing, but after 180 versions so far closest to my memory: http://bobnolan-sop....ded%20mp3s/Mills.mp3

I hope the true answer still is out there, just waiting to be found by me!, but right now I feel very sad, because I am afraid my question already has been answered...

Well, it must be said: Mills Bros is also so far The Best version ;-)
