Beta access violation
« on: June 26, 2006, 12:48 AM »
I'm getting an intermittent "EAccess violation" error when starting 1.10.06 beta. This alternates with a more standard looking access violation dialog that gives an address for the violation.

i hate to see a post like that from a new donator - please accept my apologies.
we'll get this sorted out with your help - thank you for reporting the error.

can you try this:

try exiting program (make sure its not running in tray) and going into Clipboard Help+Spell directory
and deleting the files:
Last.preset.dock
Last.preset.grid
Last.preset

then restarting.

see if that helps.

if that fails you could try deleting:
ClipboardHelpAndSpell.ini
from the Clipboard Help+Spell directory.

if that doesn't cure it - do you notice any pattern to the errors?

It has happened to me having such errors because when i installed the latest beta, it didn't remove the older program i had there (because apparently, it was named "clipboard help and spell.exe" while the new one is "clipboardhelpandspell.exe").

I also had a similar problem when i created a shortcut, so, how are you launching the program, from a shortcut or from the xexcutable itself?

I couldn't get a firm pattern on the access violations, so I just did a clean install.

I ordinarily don't install any betas on top of a beta, but I couldn't definitely remember uninstalling the previous one (which was the first version of CHS I ever used), so I'm assuming I didn't.

So far, all seems well with the clean install, but the situation begs a new question. Which files actually contain my saved clips, and are those files likely to be safe to move between beta installations?

Thanks, both of you, for your help,

Jim

the Database subdirectory in clipboard help+spell directory contains all the data for your clips.

yes, you can move them at will to a new machine, or back them up etc.
(though chs already makes backups)
