New Bill Would Repeal Patriot Act
« on: March 25, 2015, 11:55 AM »
Borrowing from Slashdot's copy:
http://yro.slashdot....d-repeal-patriot-act

A new piece of bipartisan legislation that aims to repeal the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act, which the NSA has used to justify broad domestic surveillance ... the Surveillance State Repeal Act.

The bill also attempts to dramatically strengthen whistleblower protections, so situations like Edward Snowden's and Thomas Drake's don't happen in the future. This legislation is not expected to get the support of Congressional leaders, but supporters hope it will at least inspire some debate about several provisions of the Patriot Act coming up for renewal in June.

I haven't dug into this yet - just getting the shell topic out there.

I also haven't read it yet. But if it's as described, this is probably the most important potential legislation we'll see for years. Although DC isn't the best place for the discussion, I'd urge all of you to call your legislators and urge them to get on board.

Don't worry, your boredom has just begun, with the upcoming US Presidential elections you will surpass your GAS* limit in record time.  Already I'm over my limit with just the announcement of one of the runners.

I thought I should send you a gift, then realised that I don't know your address. Hopefully a virtual one will suffice. :)

Sorry... couldn't resist... FWIW - I eavesdrop on a lot of different countries' politics, and they all blow dead donkeys. What's going on now in Africa is pretty crazy too! :) That's totally 666 thread stuff though.

But, on topic... I'll be keeping my eyes open for the next train wreck. :P

I am an American, but once I realized the only difference between political candidates is what they promise before they into office, but once they do get into office they do everything the same way their predecessors did, I quickly lost any interest in politics.

I think I was 12.

The video from EFF on this page:
https://fight215.org...source=20150420video
helped me understand what's going on (have to admit I didnt follow any of the links above :-[ )

Also details on what to say to your representative, even a link for us non-US people (you can tweet).

Love how they named it the Patriot Act. so, if you spoke against it You would appear to not be patriotic. There should be a law against deceptive naming of bills. >:(
