If MS uses #9 for an upgrade  numbering the next completely new O/S #10 seems perfectly logical.

well, if you put it like that ('logical'), I'll have to mention this:

Vista is NT 6.0.

Windows 7 was indeed a polishing of Vista, that's why it was NT 6.1.

not sure where that leaves 8, or 9 or 10 ...

So if we're gong there.... At what version do they have to stop calling the Technology New... Shouldn't it be SOS10 instead?

I still want to know why people actually continue to pay for Office when OpenOffice does the same job and costs nothing.

And OpenOffice isn't the only GPL backed alternative.

To me, Microsoft at this point only retains its marketplace dominance just because its what everyone has been using and the name everyone knows to look at.

Everything done by Microsoft has open source equivalents available, some of which may actually be the better solution.

In time people will realize this, and the microsoft dominance will break. Or some other fresh startup will take hold, and do to Microsoft what Microsoft did to CP/M almost 30 years ago.

Because OpenOffice is slow and non-responsive.  Just answering for myself.  When I built my new computer, I'd decided to try to stop using Office.  My experience with OpenOffice was underwhelming enough that I'm looking at getting into Office 365, especially with all that it offers.  It takes a lot longer to open the same documents (even native) on my new, faster computer than my old computer.  And trying to open the same rtf document on both?  It's no comparison.

Uh oh... I think the universe is going to collapse on itself.

Windows is well known for sucking every other version. XP was good. Vista wasn't. Win7 was good. Win8 wasn't.

We were all expecting Win9 to be good. But if Win9 is going to be called Win10, but Win10 is supposed to suck, but Win9 is going to be good...

CANNOT COMPUTE!

I wonder which version number Windows 10 will have. 6.4?
Just to add more confusion.

But it seems that Windows 10 will make Listary and Dexpot a bit less important. Neat.

You shouldn't choose your software based on its license. It'd leave you with not much choice.

Microsoft Office is nice for teams, given that LibO/OOo are the only alternatives with real plans for a built-in collaborative "cloud storage" - stuck to mere plans for years now. For personal use, probably SoftMaker Office (and WordPerfect - the text processor - for letters; yes, I'm still undecided) is the better choice anyway when it comes to quality.

Purportedly, another report has been leaked  8)
I was confident that Win9 will be a free update for Win8/Win8.1/Win8RTF but purportedly it will also work by submitting $30 US and a valid copy of Win7  WTH

http://www.tomshardw...threshold,27779.html

I'm waiting now for purported report about Linux, and Dos6.21 would be nice  :-\
Android.... not so much  :(

OT - out of curiosity why is anyone still using OpenOffice at all? Barely developed these days and seems to be the only thing that uses Java anymore (and that in itself is a good reason not to use OO).

Why not jump to LibreOffice which is much better and doesn't rely on Java and is actively being developed?

As for MS Office - 2007, 2010 will be the last versions I use from choice simply because you have a DVD and can install on desktop and laptop (or 3 PCs fro the Home and Student version). No interest in Office 365, and if Windows becomes a subscription service I will decamp to Linux (or even Apple - except I can't afford that) when end of life on the final none subscription version happens. Having said that manufacturers are already struggling - trying to sell subscription based products with their hardware is just going to make sales even harder. So many of the big names are already pulling out of PC and laptop sales in Europe (including Sony, Toshiba and Samsung) - it is only going to get worse.

This!

Or Softmaker's FreeOffice if you don't want a FOSS product. Linux version available too for that day when and if you decide to walk away from Windows.

WPS Office Free 2014 is another viable alternative. The Windows version is mature. Kingsoft has been around for years. Their Linux version is still officially an alpha, but it is available for public download. Links to do that can be found here. FWIW I use it ( the deb version) regularly and it's a very stable alpha. I've had no surprises at all in a year+ of regular use.

YMMV 8)

That was what I tried.  It was still slow, at least in my experience.

What I'd give for a "day in the Microsoft marketing meeting."

"I know, let's go from 7, to 8, to ... 10!"

In other news, Microsoft gave $500 million to assist preschoolers with their basic counting skills!
:P
(Just kidding!)

Windows 10 x64 Tech Preview ISO Image - Direct Link

Heh heh. Notice the URL contains W9TPI, i.e., Windows 9 Technical Preview Image. ;D

According to Microsoft's website, the SHA-1 for the above ISO should be: EB75A3D3C0F621F175B75DC65DB036D0E00EAC43

But don't you also need a product key for the ISO to work?

Boy, I've cut down a lot on what news I follow over the years.  i think I may cut out a whole bunch of tech news.  These articles about new devices and new features and stuff are really making me  :-\.

So all this news about windows 10.  ok.  All they've really done is change the start button so it's now even bigger with tiles showing.  One programmer.  One day.  Let's say 10 programmers, one month.

What else?  built-in multiple desktops?  ok.  windows users have had third party tools forever, so who really cares?  I can't criticize it too much, of course, they are just addressing the (quite stupid) complaints of users who say windows has nothing while apple has all these great software built into the OS.

This move away from the windows third-party tools is still troubling to me.  It's making me keep an eye out on Linux.

No, it just installs. I've got it running in a VM at work.

How'd you get it to install? It crashes my VirtualBox VM during boot.
