Speaking of command line.. do you (or anyone reading) know of a utility similar to Windows Run-Command?  WRC itself isn't so bad.  But the extras it has just don't seem to be things I use commonly, other than RegEdit Button.

All the GUI prompt emulators for Windows, be they multitab or whatever, just seem unstable.  Something like WRC would be cool f it just had more useful doodads tacked on.

Edit:  I'm thinking freeware utilities.   :)

If I had a title maybe I could help
I have about 300 CD/DVDs containing freeware that I have ratholed over the years and most have been indexed with Cathy but without something to look for I wouldn't know where to start  :-[

Come up with a title and I'll search all 300 discs to find it  :D

From memory, I don't recall a third party utility associated with the "Run" command in any O/S  :(

Oooooh! Nifty!

For "assoc", try "assoc >aso.txt" then open the file or just type "aso.txt".

I've not seen assoc before.

The CMD window doesn't hold many lines in the buffer, so you'll likely need to write it to a file to see the results.

Do you mean something like 4dos?  I never used it but it sounded like it could be good stuff, many people raved about it for years. Looks like it has gone freeware, although I haven't dug into the site.  I'm sure there are other DCers who can comment on it.

Or can you be more specific about what you have in mind?

Thanks for the reply.  :)

Something like this:
http://www.powercmd.com/

only free would be of interest.

And/Or Windows Run-Command only with a better button set.  RegEdit and a command prompt are obvious.  But the other buttons I don't recognize and there's no tool tip to tell what they are on mouse hover.  I'd have to run them to find out.  Always a hairy proposition.

The free version of 4DOS is TCC/LE by JP Software.  Here's a DC thread on it:  Take Command Console LE from JPSoft
For a free powercmd-alike (I think) here's a DC thread on Console:  console: a great CMD.exe replacement application.

OK.  I remember playing around with 4NT quite awhile back. Thanks. It looks like it may be fun.  :)

Thanks.  I have enough to mess with for a bit.  :)

Edit:  This is a good example of what I run into.  I installed it.  Ran it.  Did a simple command.  Clicked the magnifying glass to do a search.  I got "has stopped working" dialog.  Uninstalled it.  :)

Nice, there are a few of them I didn't know.
Would be nice however if the article said from which version of Windows each appeared, so we know whether or not we can use them¹ on various versions. Though there probably are not many people still running Windows 9x or 2000...

I'd suggest you be more careful and try not to break things  :o

Rob van der Woude - his webpage discusses batch commands extensively...including in which version of Windows a command works.

Break?  I didn't even run commands in tabs concurrently.  Didn't even try to bend it.  :)

Great, thanks!
Already had bookmarked his site after looking for stuff about WMI but never took the time to really explore it.

DOSTips is a good site for searching for how to perform an operation using a command file, from simple things like string replacement to adding a folder requester GUI.

Also, StackOverflow is full of interesting DOS command examples/code.

Console if you want your basic multi-tab, editor-like CMD enhancement, (and it's portable).

For Kindle Subscribers,

I have a free eBook from Kindle, titled "Introduction to the Command Line (Second Edition) The Fat Free Guide to Unix and Linux Commands".
If you use Kindle it's well worth checking it out   :D

"... Cmder is a software package created out of pure frustration over the absence of nice console emulators on Windows. It is based on amazing software, and spiced up with the Monokai color scheme and a custom prompt layout. Looking sexy from the start ...":
