It's likely that he might have had a tiny inkling of what he was ruling on, i.e. He might have understood a tiny bit of technology.

This is a horrible decision. The implications are extremely dark.

I can't quite understand how the court that just got software patents right and ruled police DO need a valid warrant to search a cellphone or similar device did something so completely surprising.

But that's SCOTUS if history is anything to go by.
