pretty nice graphics, really weird world (portals! PORTALS!), etc.

Excuse my ignorance but does anyone over the age of 12 find this sort of game fun - looks pretty repetitive and boring to me. Maybe its a boy thing ...

Hehe, probably not very interesting at a gameplay level.

I like the pretty graphics, and the thing that intrigues me a bit about it is the appearantly heavy use of "portals" (both as a gameplay element and as an technical engine thing).

i'll play it just to see the new ideas for all the portal stuff - otherwise it looks a bit too like quake 4 with all the neon lights.

as for it being repetitive - isn't EVERY genre under the sun until you've spent time getting to know the subtleties and nuances? not trying to defend this game or other shootemups - it certainly doesn't look as varied as half-life 2 - i just find the 'games are for kids' attitude a bit out of date these days.

i find things like classical music and opera repetitive and boring - not because they inherently are, i simply have chosen not to spend any time learning to appreciate such things as there are other types of noise i already enjoy.

other than that i think you're right about it being mainly a boy thing, Carol.

vrgrrl may be able to offer a more authoritative opinion on the subject of computer game gender preferences.

This is my style of games, but it's an interesting demo, the way this games plays with portals and gravity notions are strange. I like the part where the character gets reduced, and walks on that sort of moon.
Definitelly, a very weird game!

Wow, um, an MC Escher-type world stylized and brought to life, and that's boring? :D Looks pretty darn cool to me. I must say I wasn't really looking forward to Prey before this trailer. I remember following it years ago when it was originally started, 1997 or something I think, and looked pretty amazing then. They were talking about the same portal technology, etc. Then Serious Sam came out and had the same stuff a number of years later. So that tech isn't really new. But I do think the way they're integrating it with their world and doing cool things with gravity is interesting and looks potentially quite fun.

Portals have been here for *quite* a while, even before serious sam. But because ID Software used BSP, that's where all the rage was :)

But I haven't seen portals used at quite this level before.

Yeah, portals have been around a long time. But Serious Sam was the first game that I saw which used it in the way Prey was promisiting to do, that's all.

Hm, I can't seem to remember any "funky" use of portals in Serious Sam... but it's been a while since I played it :)

thought i'd post this here as it's all about 'portals'...

...anyone played Valve's new 'Portal' game? http://en.wikipedia..../Portal_(video_game)

i've just finished the main game - so now all the extra levels are open - and i have to say it was most enjoyable. the idea of being able to fire portal doorways from a gun is a great idea - the puzzles are just about right not to be too frustrating either.

anyway, if you like puzzles but like portals even more then i suggest you have a go with 'Portal' the game.

f0dder? i thought you've have picked up it by now?

Portal is indeed a lovely game. Its not just the portals thats awesome about it either the dark humor is at least 25 percent of the gaming experience

I didn't realize that completing the main Portal game unlocked extra levels, until p3lb0x told me so :-[

It's indeed a very nice little game, with some great humor. And the way the story progresses is nice as well...
Spoiler
I love it that you start in media res, in a clinical environment, without any clue what's going on... I really thought the game would end with the incinerator, but nooo - it's like it doesn't start until then. Lovely!

It's funny that portal technology (used as an engine technique) is pretty old, but it took until Prey and Portal to incorporate it as game elements (as far as I know, anyway). It's too bad Valve didn't go all the way with this, though - portals have to be fired at planar surfaces (ie, not on a hilltop or anything "funky"), regular HL2 AI doesn't take it into account, etc... I'd love to see this being used in more games, although I can imagine it's very hard to incorporate it in non-puzzle games, since it would make "cheating" so much easier.

sometime last year, i received my PCGamer with the CD contained a demo version of Prey but never got around to install it.. :) btw, Prey has had an interesting history as it was developed at the same time as Duke Nukem Forever.. of course, now the Duke has become the standard bearer of vapourware..

Haha I love how you can shoot yourself in one of the portals in the video.

with the references to 'black mesa' in Portal i'm hoping that there will be some half-life portal action in the future - maybe in espisode 3. unlikely to happen, i know.

(i've thought about having a go at making a map (or three) for Portal but as i've not looked into it i don't know how difficult this will be.)

The guy that got the idea for prey died before they could finish it, so at least they had an excuse for late release... Duke Nukem Forever is just pathetic. I had looked forward to it, though :(

The history in prey is pretty so-so and the native american angle to it feels so cheesy and early-nineties >_<. But it was enjoyable to play nonetheless.
