K-Meleon anyone?
« on: February 13, 2014, 07:59 AM »
With Firefox (Chrome) Australis on the way soon, i'm considering viable alternatives like Seamonkey, Palemoon and even K-Meleon which is now at 74b2 !

Anyone recall this lightweight browser?

Palemoon was getting good press here on dc - I was considering trying it as FF was struggling a bit here (win7 x64), but havent yet...

I used K-Meleon for a while on earlyish XP, seems like a long time ago now. I know app103 recommends it for older machines. I've been with FF so long - with TabMixPlus and Session-saver - that I just was never really bothered to even try Chrome much. But, FWIW, for the same reason I wouldnt go back to K-Meleon either.

Good point.
Extensions have always been a if not the major player for Firefox.  :-*
I just don't understand the disrepect the Mozilla Foundation is showing to extension devs by removing the addons bar for example.

p.s. did notice that K-Meleon is working on Linux version too!

Hmm, somewhere in here is my view too.

- I've been trying out PaleMoon for years, and haven't seen any of the actual "optimizations for Windows" they talk about. I tend to use for minor technical reasons such as a slightly different menu bar, it is Not-FF so if something does crash FF, Palemoon is still running in a different process, and just that on my task bar I can color code things blue and orange via using both browsers at once
- But there is a minor bug where Miles' BBSS program won't behave right for me on Palemoon!

So I don't know what KMeleon is up to. One time a couple of years ago I checked in with it, but they hadn't updated their font rendering code at that time so pages looked a bit yukky. But "It's 2014 and all that", so I might look.

@tomos,

There's a session saver incorporated and a shortcut key 'ctrl+alt+s'

Now if i can find the 'search as you type' feature i like so much about Firefox ...

It works well except for two crashes I experienced in the previous beta. So far I haven't experienced them again in the new beta.

did K-Meleon undergo any radical version number changes like Mozilla? because the last version i have is named as thus, K-Meleon1.5.4en-US.exe.

I think the high version number is temporary.

Altho I haven't tried K-Meleon I looked at the screen shots and prefer to stick with SeaMonkey Portable.
I would like to speak up for SeaMonkey Portable--
-you can easily move or copy the entire folder anywhere; another drive, OS, or wherever,
-you can make 1 or 2 backup copies in case the main copy gets goofed,
-it gives you a built-in Desktop email server,
-as of this post it is actively supported by its creators,
-unlike Chrome, I can easily change background color to off-white and save my eyes from e-'snow blindness', or switch to white when the website requires it.

If it were "just up to competition" this last couple of posts would work for me, but when you start getting quasi-forced ads vs the general sneakiness of Google (Chrome), I get a little upset that just doing "old style computing" is getting so hard! (You know, just do a command, and not have to out-think the weird-ware drifting by!)

I used K-Melon a number of years ago.  It was lightening fast. I don't remember why I quit using it.   :(
