Dead Drops - Release your inner P2P spy! :D
« on: September 29, 2013, 01:09 PM »
Found this:

http://deaddrops.com/

‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USB flash drives are embedded into walls, buildings and curbs accessible to anybody in public space. Everyone is invited to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop is installed empty except a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is open to participation. If you want to install a dead drop in your city/neighborhood follow the ‘how to’ instructions and submit the location and pictures.

Seems pretty cool. Worth having a look.

The idea behind it is pretty cool. Kind of like digital geocaching. The problem that I see with it, is there isn't anything but trust and morals to stop someone from putting a virus on one of the dead drops. Yeah, someone who knows a decent amount about tech would know not to open an exe they found on one of the drops, but the average Joe that only knows how to surf the web and check their email, wouldn't know not to open an exe.

This.  And USB drives can be made to autorun an exe.

The security implications are there, but it still seems kind of fun.

I agree with the security risks making this impractical.. Besides, I think if you are going to do this kind of thing, physicalness is more satisfying -- check out Letterboxing instead - see https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=34741.0
