That guy should play the lottery...

Of course, he may have used all of his luck in one shot and drown in the shower.

^ Here's some more accident porn (didn't check anything except the "close calls" - they're safe enough, but they'll leave your heart racing):

So as a short break from the steady drone about the Police State Nazis we have this:

Oregon police deliver pizza after driver is injured in car crash

Officers Michael Filbert and Royce Curtiss of Portland's police force were snapped while hand-delivering the pie after the original delivery man was ensnared in a traffic accident. Customer Steve Huckins said he was initially worried when the officers came to his door, but then started laughing.

That cyclist incident is an incredible shot. He looks like he may have injured his right arm (or the sleeve cloth is just torn). He must have been impacted by some thing(s) - at least a bit - at some stage, but soo lucky. The front wheel of the bike seems to have copped a blow, probably spinning him around anti-clockwise by the look of it.
Is there any info about his condition afterwards?

Wish granted! Look here.

Lorem Ipsum Of Good & Evil, Google & China

How many here know what "lorem ipsum" is?

I'll add this snip from the article (called a "footnote")

"A spokesman for Google said the change was made to fix a bug with the Translate algorithm (aligning ‘lorem ipsum’ Latin boilerplate with unrelated English text) rather than a security vulnerability.

Kraeh3n said she’s convinced that the lorem ipsum phenomenon is not an accident or chance occurrence."

-- A Spokesman at Google calls herself "Kraeh3n"? With a 3? Is this the next generation legacy of Prince-glpyh-Prince? Forget internet handles, this is a real-world spelling!?

Some other interesting gifs and jpgs at the site below, beside the one in the post above this one.

Disclaimer i have yet to play LoL

Maybe but fair warning, it's a bit of a wild ride blog, not nearly as crisp and interesting as the sign posted above!

Another small page in the Search Engine wars

I just watched Kung Fu Hustle again today. I really enjoy "enhanced movie watching" on my computer, where I can learn so much alongside the movie between Rotten Tomato critiques, and then looking up terms.

But while lots of my searches are just lazy and almost impossible for Yahoo to miss, sometimes a few surprises pop up.

According to one review, "mo lay tau" (special quotes use here, read on) is supposed to be a kind of "I refuse to give up even though you defeated me in the material world" attitude. Neat. Off I go to Yahoo (Aka Bing) (take that, Google!). But then ... well ... Yahoo failed me.

Turns out the reviewer made a spelling mistake. This is where the art of second order searching begins. I spend a modest amount of time "yelling" at search engines because I'd type in something obscure, only for it to give me some completely different set of results based on it thinking it knows more than I do. Made up example: Suppose there was a little known allegorical phrase "Miles of Cypress" (trees). Back comes "Showing results for Miley Cyrus. Click a second time to actually show the results for Miles of Cypress".

Then when you actually do that, all these weird pages that are beyond turbo-optimized to respond to basically any set of words show up. But occasionally you do need the search engine to guide you. But, heed this Microsoft, *suggest* what you think it is, don't re-write the search and then say "re-click here to actually search what you typed in."

The results from yahoo were (with some skipped for drama):

Showing results for mo lay thai
Search instead for mo lay tau

Microsoft, you beat me. But I will not give up!

Off I go to the Sauron Castle of Google:

Did you mean: mo lei tau

Bingo. (And off we go to sensible results.)

To make things worse, Startpage claims to offer "search results from Google in complete privacy". Well, I can only take their word about the privacy, but the resulting returned items are some bastardized mess that definitely isn't Google! It did barely pick up the Wiki page, but no more.

Anyone know of a really crisp way to search Google in privacy?

I always use DuckDuckGo

They're not bad, I just never felt the need previously to drill through three different engines and never got around to using them. Unfortunately, DuckDuckGo also just failed the test.

mo lay tau (into DuckDuckGo)
"Sorry, no results here."

And to be honest it's "not that hard of a test", Stephen Chow made the concept famous for years starting in the 1990's after Tiannamen Square, and with the right spelling, there's plenty of material. Luckily in this case, had I really worked at it, there's a "back door", via Wiki.
"Throughout the 1990s, Chow made lots of famous movies and his movie style became known as Mo lei tau". But the "interesting stuff" aspect is when there isn't. If you don't know how to spell something, that's the weakness of engines unless they have really good guesses.

^ https://startpage.com/ works better I find - but very occasionally, I do have to go back to google or bing.

With StartPage, this thread was #3 (!) and this was #6 when I searched mo lay tau:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mo_lei_tau

EDIT// and ^that's^ better results than google

Well I had gotten that far, but maybe it's preference, one wiki result buried in the middle of other stuff, vs a suggestion to re-search so that all the results come back relevant-ish.

So it looks like I found an interesting test case.

I'll have to poke around on it a bit here and there.

^ Yeah, I neglected to say that startpage also suggests the 'correct' spelling

so definitely better than google in this case. And miles better than duckduckgo. I find I use mostly the two alternatives (duckduckgo, startpage), and occasionally google or bing. I can never remember which ones are better at what, so it's usually trial and error for me...
