Depending on what I need I use WordPad or Programmer's Notepad.  I highly recommend Programmer's notepad for a plain text editor or for a full blown editor program for writing in various types of code.  I'm going to definitely check out Notepad2 because of all the good reviews here.

For plaintext, I generally use Boxer -- partly because I won a DC drawing for a copy, but I've been aware of its reputation for general wonderfulness for years and years and years. I'm also quite fond of notepad++.

For richtext, I'm also very fond of Jarte. It's idiosyncratic but once you get used to the way they've implemented the interface -- particularly the clickless controls in Compact mode -- it's hard to give up on. Fast, effective and extremely solid, in my experience.

I try a lot of this sort of stuff out -- I spend a lot of time hammering my keyboard, one way or another -- and these three have floated to the top of my go-to list of things to use and pretty much stuck there. In case that's any sort of recommendation. :)

I’ve also recently discovered TextEditorAnywhere which rather nicely lets me use Jarte to type things like this. :)

I would probably have bought emeditor at some point if they hadn't stopped offering lifetime licenses, but I can understand why they did it.
EmEditor Free for personal use, but you might find the limitations too great.  Besides, good though it is, it's a bit big for this thread?

EmEditor Free

Yesterday I tried it.
First of all I don't see the difference between free version and professional version: in any case EmEditor asks the registration code.
Then, when I open a .RTF document I see also the codes of the RTF format (for example "\par")!!!!!

Is EmEditor just that way or did I miss something?

You should read the announcements on that homepage, or the announcement thread of v13 here.

EmEditor is a text editor. Not an RTF editor. Plain text only. Like notepad, notepad2, notepad++,...

I'm slightly surprised not to see any love for EditPad Lite here, given how popular EditPad Pro has historically been.  Maybe "Free for Personal Use" is too much limitation?

Even kPad deserves a try. It's a minuscule program (104 Kb) but it seems like WordPad and moreover it makes automatically "clickable" the URLs we paste.

It's part of Tiny USB Office: http://xtort.net/fre...tivity/floppy-office
Antivirus false positives.

A program 9.3 MB large to edit plain text only. I am a little perplexed...

another one I found this morning Jovial Notepad is less than 60kb and does RTF

seems fairly lite on features, but it's tiny and it does RTF

+1 Yes, EditPad Lite is a superb tabbed text editor.

And EditPadLite now features the same JGSoft regex engine as its big brother. Note also that as of v6, Notepad++ now incorporates the very powerful PCRE regex engine so that is worth a look-see (if regex search/replace is important to you).

Actually what you wrote is true for anything, not for text editors only.

Plain text files are tremendously useful... I never did understand why people felt they needed fancy word processors to keep notes and lists of stuff.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I also use a text editor for composing email replies (I don't trust online editors).

For freeware editors, I can personally recommend Notepad++ and PSPad. And RJ TextEd is also worth a look. All three include spell checkers, which not all text editors have—many being oriented toward programming.

Cheers, Ander

Probably because they like text enhancements and automatic formatting. But at the very least, something tiny that does richtext is good enough for most people’s needs most of the time, I’d have said.

But if you’ve been out and bought a PC with an evaluation copy of Office on it and you don’t understand that there are low-cost or free alternatives, you’re probably also not going to get (a) that you don’t need Word for a shopping list or, for that matter, (b) that emailing .docx files is Irritating, for all sorts of reasons.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I also use a text editor for composing email replies (I don't trust online editors).

It does require that you remember the syntax for text enhancements -- or not use them, of course. (Said the chap writing from inside Jarte :) )

And RJ TextEd is also worth a look.

Not one I’d come across. So I’ve downloaded the portable version.

HOW BIG??!!  :o

Nearly 100Mb once extracted from the (slightly less than half that) zipfile? Good grief. It’d better be good!

(There are times when I remember that the first PC I had regular use of had 640k RAM and a 20MB hard disk -- and that WordStar ran comfortably from a small fraction of that disk space :) Okay, okay, [/old fart mode] ;) )

I use xplorer², and it has an excellent Notepad-replacement Editor called Editor2. It's "About" note says it is "the Quadratic Notepad replacement" and that it is "free as beer". It's rather nifty and very fast.
Installed filename is editor2_64.exe (size 217kB) for the Win-64 installation of xplorer².

"ReadMe" txt file: Editor2.txt * Editor2.txt (17.09 kB - downloaded 220 times.)

Oops, sorry. I had not been following this thread until recently, and in my haste I did not look over the previous page - if I had of done, I would have quoted your comment and added +1 to it. As it was, I unintentionally duplicated it.    :-[

I remember those good old days - until one discovered TSRs, and ran into RAM-cram :)  If you're nostalgic for WordStar, still the best way to get text down on disk, take a look at WSedit, or its more basic brother ME (Martin's Editor), the latter being intended as (gasp!  Back on topic!) a Notepad replacement, and both of them freeware.

More mumbling...

After Notepad2 wandered away somehow, I put it back. Except this time I am in a chess mood, so the auto line numbering could be amazingly helpful! It would automatically number game scores (Could allow for one line of annotation per move or just do ... and carry it over on the next line)

And as a quick and dirty form of analysis, you could put lines side by side and then compare "did I castle on move 9 or 10 and what did that do?"

You might also be able to do a Bible so you can list "chapter and verse"! :  )

I have tried a bunch of the programs mentioned above and for me Notepad2 hits the sweet spot. Much more powerful than Microsoft Notepad but not as complex as Notepad++. But I have no word autocomplete in autohotkey files in Notepad2-mod. Does anyone here have that working?

Have you looked at SciTE4AutoHotkey?

No I hadn't. But that is a standalone editor (right?). I want to stick with Notepad2-mod and .ahk code highlighting already works there. It is only the autocomplete that falters.
