You could try Scintilla, it's what Notepad++ is based on.

AkelPad is a nice minimalist one...  It has lots of different plugins though.

At the present moment I have a strange problem I don't want to investigate. when I open FastStone to see an image, and after go to notepad++ seem "clock thinking" and take a few seconds to restore the cursor. ...
I prefer not try at these moments....

Please elaborate on the problems you have with Notepad++, as I've been using it as my main editor for anything not supported by a dedicated IDE, and see no problems with it at all.

Advise: Just upgrade to the latest available version. It's fine.

The base version of Notepad++ (whichever version) has always worked fine (I always download the latest portable version though). In my personal experience NP++ does sometimes mess up with a combination of plug-ins. These plugins by themselves work fine, just the combination of them doesn't always work as advertised.

Because of that I tried the beta from Sublime text editor. This is also a very, very nice text editor, but that one is not free (although the version I tried at the time can be used indefinitely). Still, NP++ keeps drawing me back as it feels the most 'natural' to me.

I tried to use a portable Windows version of GVim, but that one didn't feel right to me. However, I do think it is a very capable text editor. And when you try GVim (or Vim), I also took a look at the portable Windows version of EMacs. But that has the same "problem" as GVim. But also here I can say that this is a very capable text editor.

All in all, the power (and 'simplicity') of Notepad++ cannot be beaten (in my point of view). I think all went "wrong" with me when I used CygnusEd on Amiga. That was (and still is) a favorite of mine.

Emacs? Really?

Sublime Text is not portable AFAICS.

At the time (some 6 months ago) there was a link to a portable version. At least my memory clearly says so...which is (of course) not affected at all by the beer and wine I have consumed in the mean time...

Sorry, my fault. There is.

(Admittedly, ST3 is my main editor. It does not fit the OP's requirements though.)

You mean like any other software on a Windows machine?  I've got commercial software, brand-new out of the box that crashes on a regular basis.  And then there's Windows updates....  :(

Crashes are should be pretty rare in most circumstances.  On my box, the only things that I have that crash regularly are Visual Studio and Skyrim.  Skyrim is my fault, because I mess around with it so much.  And Visual Studios is... Visual Studio.

If you have programs that crash regularly, best bet is to find something else, IMO.  Because sooner or later one of those crashes will be something more than just inconvenient.

Problem there is, if you get something else then there's probably another app you use that it won't get along with.  I've got a couple of programs that work great as long as I don't use it while another certain program is running.  Needless to say, they aren't multitasking friendly.  lol

And that's a problem with the application, not the OS.  I remember the days of DLL hell quite well, and they haven't gone away... they've just been made better, and it's a bit harder to get in that situation.  But it's always possible to write sucky code.  Put the blame where it needs to lie- the applications.  And get the developers to fix the situation, or move on.  You don't have to accept sucky development.

Have you read the commercial software's shrink-wrapped agreements lately?  Just taking the shrink-wrap off the CD/DVD prevents you from getting a refund, so once you buy the software it's not like you can just move on.
And I can (and do) blame a lot of this on the OS, especially after (almost every time) an OS update/patch breaks your computer and/or installed software.  I wonder why you never hear about Linux or OSX having these kind of problems?
But you are right, I don't have to accept sucky development, which is why I'm headed for Linuxville.....   8)  I'll keep a bare-bones installation of XP on the computer to use all my old software and games.  A bare-bones installation of XP is fast too.....

You can.  Cut your losses man... don't accept poor QOL for $50! </tongue in cheek>

But you are right, I don't have to accept sucky development, which is why I'm headed for Linuxville.....

Completely your choice... but bad developers exist in Linux-land also.  It's not the OS... it's the developers making the software.
