I had completely forgotten how funny this could be! Thanks for getting it working again. I have been listening on BBC Radio 4 to the Reith Lectures (very good they were too - especially the last one). If you are interested then you can hear them all at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/reith2006/For fun I translated the brief summary of the fifth lecture via ten cycles of German and it comes out as: Music Barenboim showed the fact that it gives and a new journey for our politics strength would know a fundamental difference between the energy, illustrated those. See if you can guess what it meant ... and check by clicking Music has shown Barenboim that there is a fundamental difference between power and strength which could map a new journey for our politics. Actually it can be useful to use Google translation - how about making boomerang a useful app by allowing users to have a one way translate option too and also expand the interface to have source and destination languages so that people who don't speak English can enjoy the joke?

not a bad idea carol, i will add foreign language starting language, but im not sure it makes sense to make this into a real tranlator - surely there are better tools for that.

True - but a lot of people go to Google or AltaVista for a quick and dirty translation - it would be handy to have it available as a quick desktop tool to click. How about adding other engines (like BabelFish etc. but be aware that a lot of these pages actually use Systrans and so don't generate different translations) and allowing people to at least see the translated version?

Here is another funny ... I really like this one. I tried to be kind - one short (relatively easy) sentence in English, boomeranged just once to see if any of the translation could be close to accurate. See if you can guess what I tried to say and which language it was boomeranged through: Me the hemp cloth for the breakfast [khen] with ate the egg. Started life as I had bacon and eggs for breakfast
and was boomeranged through

Heh! Mouser, yours might be true on Mondays. But I still can't figure out how Carol came up with "the hemp cloth". (Isn't that something like burlap?)

Okay, I had to try it again since it's been awhile. If that takes your lamp, is the attaching screw that rearranged? The phrase started its life as How many lawyers does it take to screw in a light bulb? ...and was boomeranged through German, French & Japanese (2 loops). It then became totally insane after a single loop through all the languages: Sheep Borgi bulbs to a large number of lawyers? Mouser, I don't see "reset after each" in the help file -- what's it do?

if my memory serves me correctly, and it rarely does, "reset after each" basically starts the text back to it's original after each language, so basically its the same as running the tranlsator several times, once for each language (rather than chaining a translation through them all).

The latest verion (1.03.01) seems to be working fine here and doing it's magic as expected.
I went and checked out Traditional-Chinese, the problem with implementing it is that while there is an option to translate English to simplified Chinese, there is no option to go backward back into English, so boomerang can't use it.
However I will try to finally make the start and end languages configurable and in this case you could use it as your end language.

New version uploaded.
ps. I don't know if it's my imagination, but it seems to me that google has improved the grammar/syntax constraints on the translations.. they don't necessarily make more semantic sense than the used to, but they seem more likely to result in reasonable sounding prose.

It would be great to also see the intermediate results from the Google Translation. For example, when using English to Chinese, it would be very helpful to see the resulting Chinese from the first step of the translation.
Love the program.

Thanks for posting david This is one of these programs that i don't really ever get any feedback about or ever hear that anyone is using.. which is pretty understandable since it's a strange program and with little practical value. So it's nice to hear from someone that likes it. I'll look into displaying the other language values.
