It is effectively incredibly fast - I'll give it a good test.

Hi, DxCK, and welcome to the DonationCoder site.   :D

The GUI layout of your software is nice and clean, just the way I like them.  May we assume that your software reads the Master File Table much like Everything, UltraSearch, SwiftSearch, etc?

And seeing the memory footprint can we assume that the cache is held in ram ? I can find no written cache.

@skwire: Thanks :-) . MasterSeeker really reads the Master File Table in NTFS drives, directly from the drive's stream, and processes it with heavy multithreading and micro-optimized code. MasterSeeker also supports FAT and FAT32 drives.

@joiwind: Thanks :-) The whole cache is held in ram. No files are used. I planing to optimize the memory footprint in future versions.

Tried it this morning after reading the above descriptions.  It is indeed a fine interface.  In particular I like the simple filtering tools you've built in that make narrowing easy and fast.  I've replace Search Everything with MasterSeeker thanks to the interface/capabilities.

A welcome addition would be the ability to export the found set to a text file so that one can work with the results.  I'd have a toggle between full path and file/folder name only.

Sorry 2 say but I do NOT like it for 3 reasons:

1) It needs Admin rights to execute (Win 7 Ultimate)
2) Does NOT find/ searches files on my removable USB Stick (exFAT).

Exactly the same behaviour as Everything that I am using (mostly) to search files.

3) Puts a file named 'MasterSeeker.UACBypass.1c30b0f01bab979f9a024ebfad9ee14f' into the C:\Windows\System32\Tasks directory!
Wtf?!

Positive: it is lightning fast!

Could you make it work with exFAT???

I have only just found this and was impressed enough to install it.

I do have one request, I would like to be able to set where it opens on the screen.
I spent 25 years training to be an eccentric then I woke up one morning and realised that I'd cracked it.
I've not had to try since.

I wonder what happens if I click on thi

MasterSeeker tries to connect sites that seem not to be available anymore.

I checked Everything Search, or Swiftsearch, or NTFS-Search, but don't think they connect with the Internet.

Also when disabling 'Update' options.

MasterSeeker regulary checking for updates. This is normal behavior just like any other software on the market.
The Auto-Update only represent whether MasterSeeker update itself without asking or not. There is not way currently to disable the checking for update process.

planetnana is an alternative place for put the updates if something goes wrong with the main site. planetnana is shared hosting service so there is a lot of other accounts there that is not related to MasterSeeker.

Just discovered this awesome program and immediately switched over from Everything because you have also included fast file size search from MFT.

But i found one bug that cripples things a bit for me.
* Some file sizes are incorrect - result shows files which are actually few KB to few GB as random Tera, Peta and Exabytes (512TB up to 6,22 EB): schreenshot
Problem seems to be on one drive, it is 15TB GPT partition on NAS block device, formatted as NTFS with 16KB sector size. about 2% of all files are influenced by this, other 98% show correct size. Other drives are local disks <=2TB, MBR, 4KB sector and no bug there.

Also some other notes:
* Directory filter box, when selecting folder from "Browse" the result is not refreshed. Only when directly altering directory search string.
* Would be nice if program remembers window position and size, also column widths and visible columns
* Also multi window support would be usable future addition, right now when i open MasterSeeker.exe second time, it does not use index from previously opened instance sitting on tray and opens another instance.
* tray click open/hides window but because window open has some delay it is bit confusing. Maybe if double click also opens window its more intuitive.

EDIT: GPT disk NTFS details:

I love MasterSeeker. It has served me better than any other search program. I have been using it on a daily basis. However now all of a sudden I can't bring up the GUI. MasterSeeker appears in Process Explorer with around 20,000K memory usage, but I never see it.

@conceptualclarity

Hi,

Please send me the MasterSeekerLog file to my email.

Please try to right click MasterSeeker, and then Run As Administrator. Please report if this works.

Are you able to run other .NET applications?

I have sent the log.

I only have one account on my computer, and it has administrator designation, so that's all that came up when I right-clicked.

I feel sure I have some other .NET applications, but I don't which are which. I searched on the topic of what applications use .NET and couldn't come up with a list.

I was having problems with Webroot, and their support told me to uninstall and reinstall. actually uninstalling it proved virtually impossible. I had to use the deletion feature in MasterSeeker. I love having a search program with that feature.

My problem is resolved. DxCK sent me a replacement for an Application Data file, and it worked.

The culprit, I am certain was a program I had just installed called SnoopFree Privacy Shield. It played havoc with my screenshot programs as well as MasterSeeker. I had to uninstall and then reinstall IM Tool Pack. I have not recovered use of Screenshot Captor yet. It was very difficult getting rid of the SnoopFree service installed in Systyem32. I finally had to resort to doing a boot delete with WinPatrol. When I downloaded it a good while back, the SnoopFree program had a website, but it's gone now.

It doesn't work with ntfs partitions that are mounted in an empty folder (so called: volume mount points)...

Apart from that, is a fully portable version planned (at least one, that can store it's .xml config file in the same dir as the exe instead of %APPDATA%\DxCK\MasterSeeker?

@highend01

I didn't know the "volume mount points" feature before. I will look into it.

In the next version I will give an option to store .xml config file in the same dir as the exe.
Apart from that, are there any other problems you see that can prevent it from been fully portable?

Thank you very much for your feedback and cooperation.

@DxCK

If MasterSeeker is able to find the .xml file in its own directory please do not let it create the %APPDATA%\DxCK folder.
I've seen quite a few apps that still "mess" with %APPDATA% | %LOCALAPPDATA% even if they claimed to be portable (and ofc with their config files in the correct place).

Apart from that there are no avoidable traces that MasterSeeker leaves behind

One thing I'm missing badly (or I'm to blind to find it):
The possibility to exclude specific drives / partitions from indexing

E.g. I don't need my system drive to be indexed (in 99 of 100 cases) because all my data is on a different drive

is it just me, or does the website http://master-seeker.com/download not work anymore?  I end up going to some portal for other sites.
I end up getting redirected to http://master-seeker.com/Zm9yY2VTUg

RE: Azuretoad.  No it isn't just you.  I went through a lot of multuiple links including addictive tips and every one of them sent me to some weird "alternate site index".

I was able to get Ver 1.5 from dottech.org. I happen to LOVE Everything so anything better or faster is something I wanted to see.  But the weird "trip around the sites" thing I have no idea what happened.  Not your imagination anyway.

Hi DxCK, thanks for such a fantastic program. Was a really nice bit of syncronicity, as I found MasterSeeker right after posting a question here: http://www.mydefrag.com/forum/index.php?topic=80346.0 about why windows takes so long (!!!) to search for a file! Great to see MasterSeeker posted and discussed here on donationcoder as well.

btw - everyone - as an aside, the defragger at the forum I posted the question at, is well worth taking a look at. Absolutely fantastic defragger - because of the placement strategies it uses. I find instead of needing to defrag once every day or two, now I only need to do once every six weeks or so, if that!

Again, thanks DxCK :)

Holy Moly DxCK!  I had forgotten about this and found it again by Accident. I JUST posted a need fore this EXACT trype of program. Nothing else I found would give me this exact type of readout.  PERFECT!  Many Thanks and it works Great right out of the "Box" :-*
