I am having a very basic problem, and I hope this is the right place to raise it - apologies if it isn't.  I have downloaded ScreenCaptor (latest version) twice from two different sites, and it won't install.  When I click on the .exe file, the error message says it isn't a valid Win32 application, and installation ceases.  I am using WinXP Home.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Someone emailed me having this same problem -- this almost always means the file didn't download fully.
Try again and check the download size.   The official download link is:

Thanks for your swift reply.  I downloaded it in about 2 seconds.  Still the same error message when trying to install it.

How big is the file? Should be about 8.52 mb.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Careful -- that could easily be taken as "that's your problem then" rather than "that's your problem then".  :D

Try clearing your browser cache. IE can be stubborn about using cached material even after it's been updated online. (Also it happily keeps partially-downloaded files. It just dumps 'em wherever you said to put 'em with the full name of the intended file and no indication there was a problem. Firefox is a little smarter about that stuff.)

If that doesn't do it you'll have to look at firewall/antivirus/proxy settings and so on.

Thanks for the tip about the IE cache - I have done that.  I also downloaded the file via Firefox - and it was 8.1MB.  But now another problem, I'm afraid - I tried opening it from the Firefox download manager, and got the message attached.  So I clicked on "Launch application", and - nothing happened.  For 10 minutes, until I gave up waiting.  then I went to the folder where I had saved it and tried opening it from there.  And got the same error message I originally started with - "file is not a valid Win32 application".

I'm sinerely grateful for all your help, but I'm now giving up.  When a program is this difficult to get started - even with all the valuable help on this site - I lose interest.  I'm not so desperate for it that I want to devote hours or days of my life to getting it to even install.

But thanks, guys, for all your suggestions.  At least I've learned to empty the IE cache!

Now I'm going to google for a screen capture program I can use.

All the best

Sorry - forgot to attach the Firefox message, which might help someone else.

Sorry - forgot to attach the Firefox message, which might help someone else.
On the off chance that you haven't deleted it yet, it's on your L: drive just waiting to be run from Windows (Explorer or the command line if you're one of those hard-core typing junkies). :)  You were just in a hurry and didn't finish reading the dialog. Firefox has security built in to keep you from running programs directly from it by accident -- if you click the "launch application" button it'll do it. Or just browse to the location it's showing and you'll be all set.

The same issue would appear no matter what executable (EXE file) you download; it's probably not a problem when you download zip files and others but it's still better to manage files outside of your browser.

Thanks, Cavalcader, but I think you might have been in a hurry, and didn't read my full post.  I wrote:

So I have tried both of your suggestions, with no luck.  That's why I'm giving up and am now looking for a program that will actually install on my computer.

BTW, in my experience Firefox does not always give a warning like this, which refers to an external app being launched - it usually just warns that the file is executable.

deepkent, I don't know why the program isn't being fully downloaded to your computer from our site.

The problem isn't that the program won't install -- the problem seems to be that your computer is not successfully downloading the program.  Let's try Cavalcader's suggestion, let me upload a ZIP version of the program for you and see if that can download successfully:

https://www.donation...nshotCaptorSetup.zip

And i even uploaded it to a different server in case that's the problem you are having:
http://mouser.dcmemb...nshotCaptorSetup.zip

The file should be 8.28mb if complete.

To all users,

Please report any new bugs in a NEW THREAD in the Screenshot Captor Forum and we will add them to the Screenshot Captor - Official Bug Tracking Thread . If you see one we missed, post a new thread about it and we will begin tracking it.

Thanks,

Hi! I want to say something about ScreenCaptor)
I'm using non-standart windows shell (BBLean insted explorer.exe) and when I making screenshot (of active window) by ScreenCaptor program, on screenshot have some areas in sides and top of window (screenshoot 1). It seems not a problem, because selecting select only shooted window (screenshoot 2) and all fine but when I pressing "Crop to selection" ScreenCaptor tell me that "You need to make a selection first" o_O

And have one suggestion: when I place objects to screenshot, mode switching from created object to "Object select mode". Is it possible that when I clicking on non-object area the mode is switching back to last selected object?

p.s. Sorry for my english  :D

New beta version is uploaded -- this is a new build with a completely revamped options dialog.. hope you like it.  Please let me know any issues.  I've not made this available on the updater since i want to hear from some beta testers before i release into the larger population.

Once this passes muster I will start adding more features.

Note: In addition to the options dialog which i think is 1000000x better than old one and hopefully will make it easier for people to find and understand the different options, i am really happy with this new feature:
  • Added current browser url to info that gets captured and can be added to image comments.
So now if you take a screencapture of your browser it will actually grab the url from the current page and embed it in text form in the image comments.  Makes it easier to remember where you grabbed it from (especially if you later thumbnail it, etc.).  Just make sure you dont share a screenshot with sensitive information about the url of the web apge that you dont want to share (you can modify your file naming/comment template to remove this info if you want).

  • Rebuilt with latest version of ImageEn library -- graphics operations run faster (especially shadowing operations -- yay!)
  • Bottom panel can now be hidden completely by resizing it to 0 height.
  • Completely revamped the options dialog.

the above items are all yummy but the one below sounds fantastic, ideal for blogging. it's about time i updated my SC.

  • Added current browser url to info that gets captured and can be added to image comments.

Does this version has date based folder creation? I use minicaptor happily after latest update  but if SSC has that feature I may move to screencaptor as well.

some preliminary findings. the new options dialog is just cool! but captures are still inserted in between existing images in list/thumbnail views. changing to detailed mode and clicking on the date heading doesn't help.

The *NEW* options dialog

also, once %browserurl% is used on a browser, subsequent captures on non-browser windows still retain the field.
