Recommendations for a Host OS?

Dunno... Just doesn't work. That's what I was trying before, but if it can't see anything, there's not much I can do.

If you already have VMWare...why?

There is some mention of running Proxmox inside another VE. But they also say it's experimental, needs a host that supports "nesting", and that KVM will most likely not work. so unless you're running a sever from the command line that way, it's generally a no-go doing Prox inside another VE.

And please don't tell me you're trying to do all this on a laptop.

For testing purposes, I reckon. Dunno if it's smart to test a hypervisor on anything but bare metal, though (could be enough to test the install & setup procedure, but definitely not for testing actually running stuff on it).

VMware is for testing. I just want to "feel things out" first before running down the bare metal road, which is much more involved.

And no - this isn't on a laptop.

I don't know^* if you know but the Microserver is capable of running ESXi 5.1 with 2 or 3 VMs, (given a bit more RAM) - quite a few reports of people doing it.

If you want to have a play with it, you could remove your existing HDDs and plug in a temp storage HDD, plug a flash drive into the internal USB connector and install ESXi on it.

ESXi 5.1 for it can be downloaded from here.

You could conceivably run your FreeNAS within a VM on it as well as another 1 or 2 VMs.  Won't be suitable for playing games but it might be for some low powered or long time frame work.

Just an idea.
