The installer for Desktop iCalendar Lite is NASTY.

Thanks for the warning. As recently as last October this wasn't the case.

Would anyone help me to make this calendar application ? preferably someone newbie or who has not programmed in years like me  :P
I have in mind something like what Mouser described, like classiccalendar with some features of coolendar (mostly the email warning using gmail). I'm very intrigued about the capabilities to make multiplatform apps of the language Haxe. So the idea is to make an HTML5 webapp and try to compile it with haxe to other platforms.
The final application would be published as GPL and donations would go to support this site.

I downloaded Classic Calendar and it works with XP and Win7. It is a nice, simple program and is what I've been looking for to calendar work appointments.

What's nice about VueMinder is the ability to add hyperlinks and shortcuts to files on my computer.
Maybe some of these others can do that as well, I don't know.

Anyway, if you could add that ability, mouser, that would be cool.
Or maybe to open Notepad or choice of word processor designated,
when clicking on a date. That would more workable then a small box, I think.

I don't have VueMinder running all the time, only when I need it.

Agreed. Seems perfect for planning, recording and tracking the daily tasks for a specific project, which you don't want to get mixed up with all your other calendars and projects. A bit like a local version of iDoneThis, except also used for planning the day, not just recording it at the end.

Looking at 7stacks site again, noticed the author has a popup calendar.
Add another to the mix. Seems lite, $15
View-day, week, month, year.

It's Rainlendar ... both free and $$ versions ... been using the pro version for 'bout a year ... not too shabby for my usages, but I don't do a lot of calendaring, though, just mostly appointments.  Might be worth a look, though.  Very light on resources, small, customizable desktop display.

I think the big requirement that's going to kill most of them is the fact of displaying the calendar then allowing you to click in the cell to directly edit the text.  Most don't allow you to do that.

...which is where Classic Calendar shines... It lacks some of the other features mouser was looking for, but the basics are there.

Windates.  Have used this for longer than I care to admit and it's never failed to meet my needs.
Compaq Presario 5716 (98), Dell Dimension 4700 (XP), Lenovo ThinkPad T530 (Win 7 Pro > Win 10 Pro).

Years ago, I signed up for a calendar program called Scrybe, which was one of the easiest-to-use calendars I'd ever found. You can still visit the site at www.iscrybe.com. Apparently, it's now in permanent beta, but you can still get an invitation.

At the time, Google Calendar had just come out, and the openness of the calendar data and the ability to access it from different places tipped the scales enough that I adopted it for my personal calendaring, even though Scrybe was far and away the better product.

I'm posting this not to suggest anyone use it (although my account is still active and so I can still theoretically invite new users, if anyone's curious.) The point is, anyone looking to build a lightweight, intuitive, usable calendar app would do well to at least look at the demo video and see how Scrybe handled the UI.

I think if someone re-imagined Scrybe as a pure HTML calendar with hooks to Google Calendar data, I'd just about be in web calendar heaven!  :-* :-* :-*

Hi Mouser,
just checking in to see where things stand re the "minimalist calendar".

It seemed to me, after trying all the ones mentioned here (and a good many others) that ClassicCalendar from Wellcraftedsoftware was really the only one fulfilling the requirements, though not all of them.

I also wanted/needed the option to color-mark days (eg left-click->enter a note, right-click->different colormarks), which this program presently does not offer. I've written to the author. Unfortunately, no reply.
(As a matter of fact, *no* prog I've seen offers this in a simple straightforward manner, it's always, when available, tied to specific task categories)

Maybe one could take the ClassicCalendar framework as a starting point for your project, Mouser?
Thanks for further info and pointers

I tried to contact the developer of Classic Calendar... but no response :(  Without that, you'd have to develop from scratch.

I have downloaded Classic Calendar and find it ideal for my needs, the only problem I have with it is that it starts in a large window in the centre of the screen.
I can reduce it and put it just above the clock, then minimise it to the system tray, it will stay put until I reboot, so every morning I have to put it back.

Anyone know if it's possible to carry the settings across a reboot?

Just had a thought, could running it in portable mode be the problem?
I spent 25 years training to be an eccentric then I woke up one morning and realised that I'd cracked it.
I've not had to try since.

I wonder what happens if I click on thi

Judging by two recent threads on DC, mouser's next project should be a calendar/email program

I've been using RTPO (Ready To Print Organizer) since 1998 and have never had an issue.  It only cost $19.95, and doesn't have any crapware, at least the last time I downloaded it.  lol  It really has a lot of bells and whistles for such a small program.  It loads up in a blink of the eye and switches screens just as fast....

hi mouser and all,
well, pity that the project is sort of "suspended" for now.

my question then to all the "calendar searchers" out there is:
does anybody know of a "simple and basic" calendar program which, as mouser initially stated, offers click-and-enter-text AND (this being the function i definitely need) click-and-change-backgroundcolor [multiple color choice!] for any day of the grid?

thanks and cheers

With RTPO you can change the background color and the text color.  I don't know if you can change the background color for each day though.  It's definitely "Click and enter text".

I just got the latest update and realized that I've been getting updates since 1998 without having to pay a cent!  How great is that?  I contacted the author by email the other day about how to move the default data folder.  The very next day I got a reply telling me what to do (really simple), plus he told me he would add an option to do that from the toolbar and would be ready for download in a few days!  Now that's what I call Customer Service with a smile.....

The trial version is good for 30 days if you want to check it out.  It really is an excellent calendar program, I prefer it over any of the other commercial calendar programs that I have like the one that comes with Word, Works, Corel and more.....

Mouser, you should check out Interactive Calendar. It seems to fit your request.

Another option to look at for ideas is Calendar Editor Pro.  The main thing going for it is you can type directly into each day.  The interface isn't great for navigating between months and years, it's rough around the edges and the author disappeared and took down the site.

You can find version 3.0 at Softpedia.
