Freewaregenius.com is a great site and Samer, who runs it, just put up his list of the top 12 articles of 2012, which include some very long detailed pieces recommending the best tool for various jobs.

Definitely worth checking out.

One of the articles was a surprise to me and many others:

Do copy acceleration utilities actually lower file transfer speeds?
Our tests say yes!

by Samer Kurdi

We’ve featured several file copy acceleration utilities on this site. Recently, however, we went in and did a head-to-head test to discover which of the many free options was the best at increasing copying speed. The results surprised us greatly: all of the tools we tested actually took longer for the file transfer than Windows Explorer.

Edit:
Given the fact that TeraCopy hasn't been updated for well over a year, I am now going to remove my pro version, because of this article. However, it feels weird that the fastest third-party copier is FF Copy which hasn't been updated for nearly 6 years!! I really like these extra features that came with Tera. What am I going to do? Time will tell.

I wonder how they tested this one. There is no file available.

-the new fact is that now it has been updated!
Well, it is still a 2.3 beta-2 version, but TeraCopy is alive!

I have been using FF Copy for a month, but is skipping it now; It really is fast, but the author meant it, when he named it "Copy" - it doesn't do anything when "Move to...".
