Hi Everyone / Random MixTape Maker ideas
« on: April 21, 2006, 03:55 PM »
Thanks for your interest in my apps (currently just Random Mix Tape Maker).

If you have any feedback I'd love to hear it (good or bad).

This started out as a tiny tool for my personal use to sift thru my mp3 collection and make a playlist from my favorite artists.  Because I do a lot of work on the computer and also on the road, I would always make a mix compilation to listen to, but got tired of always picking from the same top songs, forgetting that there were other great songs as well.  So I made this thing to make a list and randomly pluck out songs for me and it's been pretty darn fun to use.

Enjoy. :)

Hi seedling,

thank for the nice program you gave us...

Thanks for your interest in my apps (currently just Random Mix Tape Maker).

Maybe you find it as interesting as I do implementing the following two features:

  • Just include songs from specific genres (these can defined in a list)
  • Just include songs from a defined time range ( e.g. 1980-1989)

This would give the user the possibility to mix a Tape for different moods or situations.
I am aware that these options will slow down the processing time, but it will greatly enhance the functionality.

Thanks again for you nice work....

Cheers..... Marc

great suggestion marc!

i'll work on that this week (shouldn't be a big deal to add).

of course the only limitation of this will be that any mp3's without ID3 info will be left out.

a related idea:

what if an additional tab was "make playlist from file list", and let users drag and drop files.
this is almost identical to the randomize playlist function, and in fact maybe you could use the same exact process:
ie when you select randomize existing playlist, all it does is initialize a list of songs, which users could also create by dragging and dropping files into it.

the purpose of this would be that we could manually select and drag in a ton of files and dirs and have it make a random playlist from that.

here's a beta to check out v 1.0.2.23

1.0.2.23 24-Apr-2006
--------------------
+ added ability to further limit song entries by year and genre as
specified in an ID3 tag [see limitations]

Hi seedling,

of course the only limitation of this will be that any mp3's without ID3 info will be left out.

thanks for the enhancement. For me it works out pretty well. Of course you are right about that limitation, but I think people who wanna use this feature have a pretty well organized collection.

Maybe you can adjust the genre feature to let the user make a selection of more than one genre; e.g. choosing "Rock" and "Pop" but leaving out "Country".

Thanks again for your nice work...

Cheers....Marc

Seedling
I was in the midst of writing exactly this program, when I found yours ..... great job!.  I just posted what I think is a bug .... drag & drop does not work in many cases (directory to RMTM ...... RMTM to Media Monkey) ...my work-around is to d&d from RMTM to WinAmp and then to Media Monkey .....
Wish List:  How about a drop down box (seeded on directory search) for Artist ..... that way you can insure that even when selecting a certain Genre your sure to include some favorite artists .......
Once again, knowing the task involved...great job

well, you can always drop a dir or mp3 file to the "Must Have List". everything that is in that list will always be included into your compilation (so long as it doesn't over extend the time or size limits).

an example would be, say you want primarily a rap genre mix, but there are a couple songs in the rock category that you'd like to incorporate. all you'd do is drop those rock songs into the "Must Have List" and set your genre limit to rap. this would then only seek out and populate the list with rap songs, but still include those other rock songs you like.

if this is not what you're talking about doing, please elaborate.

actually i think the idea could be quite nice to add to mixtape:
put a text box and let the user type in words or phrases separated by commas, and only songs with that in the title would be used; add another box for artists.

so for example, i could type:
love
in the title box, and i would get a mixtape of all songs with the word love in their title. cool.

or i could type:
blondie,pretenders
in the artist box and i would get a mixtape of all songs by those two groups

this seems like a nice idea to me.

Hi, all,

Can anyone help? I have saved a playlist but can't see how to access it up again when I shut down & later restart the program.

Peter.

Peter.

hello there!

this app doesn't load up playlists (unless you're planning on mixing up the playlist [my first incarnate of this app]). the playlist you save is meant to be used by either your favorite media player or burning application.

I suppose I can add a simple feature to reload a playlist (shouldn't be hard at all) but since this is is a playlist generator and not a media player, i can't really see the application.

i wonder if it might be a nice feature to be able to say "make me a random cd using songs from a specific playlist"

that way you could take your time and build master playlists of certain genres or collections, and use them as the source for picking random stuff.

Hello! Just found this rather groovy program recently, and if you're still working on it would like to put forward a suggestion, if that's okay. :)

All it is, you know the Black List Tab where you can add whole directories that you *don't* want to include, would it be possible to make the Must Have List behave in a similar fashion? That is, have the ability to add whole directories that you *do* want to include rather than just single songs at a time.  I just think it would make life a little easier when trying to fill up my new MP3 player with all the good stuff and none of the bad!  ;D

Other than that, the software's pretty much spot on!

Cheers!   8)

I've been meaning to do something with this project for some time but haven't had the time.

But your request seems reasonably easy to take care of; let me dust of the code and add this functionality for you.

I'm glad you enjoy the app and thanks for the feedback! :)

EDIT:
See beta update thread for update!

Is there any possibility of being able to add an entire drive (i.e. M:\) not just a directory on that drive (i.e. M:\My Music)? All my music is neatly organised into artists and I don't fancy adding all the folders individually  :'(

Otherwise it's a great program!  :D

I don't blame you about not wanting to add dir manually.  Quite frankly I had never tested for rootpath compatibility.  I'll take a look at it and fix this for you.

I'm glad you enjoy my little app. :)

EDIT:

Fixed! will upload new build now.

this prog is just great. I was looking for something like this for a long time. Great job
There is only one suggestion which I could not find in any playlist generator (including foobar's plugins):
would it be possible to limit the songs included in the playlist to a specified number of times for a specified number of genre/artist/etc?

example:
I would like to create a playlist of 80 minutes for 3 genres etc ect BUT limit to x (for example 1)  songs for each artist. So no more than 1 song from Rolling Stones for example

what do you think?

thanks a lot

Just wanted to say thanks for a very handy piece of software - just started using it and works very nicely.

I have a couple of suggestions:

I may have misunderstood something - but as far as I can see the keyword inclusion element (under Keyword Options) searches only for lyrics tags? If I'm wrong about that please could someone let me know what I'm doing wrong; otherwise I suggest that fields such as Title and Comment be included in the scan. Example -- I would like to include music in a certain key (and for classical the key is outlined in the Title field (for me anyway).

Which brings me on to the perhaps more greedy, though more general request.

My suggestion is this:

I'd like the possibility of weighting (applied to keywords)

So for example -- if the weighting is a value, 1 to 9 (9 being the strongest weighting) and keyword included Lyrics, Title, Comment, Artist etc ... ID3 fields, then I could do the following:

Keyword = "Love" Weighting = 9
Keyword = "Hate" Weighting = 1

Thus skewing the likelihood that a song with Love in the Title will be selected over "Hate"; whilst songs with "Hate" in the meta data are still more likely to be included than songs that only fulfil the base criteria -- such as Genre, Time etc...

Thus weighting does not guarantee inclusion, but influences the probability of inclusion (perhaps the heighest weighting i.e. 9, could guarantee inclusion???  - which is the Keyword version of the Must Have File List - - but I don't think that's a good idea - as conflicts arise: a 60 minute limited playlist with all songs that include "Love" could be a problem).

Also I think if this is implemented (or even understood - if I've made myself clear enough) then I quite like the idea of negative weightings too -- eg, Keyword = "Love" Weighting = -3 would make songs with Love in the Title less likely to appear than those that merely fulfil the base criteria -- such as Genre, Time etc...

Hope this makes sense.

Once again thanks for the excellent program and good luck with future developments.
