What Google may not realize is that by shutting down GR they are causing a loss of consumer confidence in their other products as well (at least among those that use GR like myself). I started using GR because I was already using many of Google's other services such as GMail and Documents so GR was just an extension of that. Because I was using so many of G-Products I developed a lot of brand loyalty. I think that now I will be much more open to considering alternatives to their other products as well. I definitely consider this move to be the beginning of the end of my use of Google services.

OK, I'm game. Why would they?
I have never seen or compiled a list of the functional needs of Gmail users - neither mine nor anyone else's.
If we were to try to formulate a serious response to @tuxman's apparently rhetorical and provocative tongue-in-cheek question, then this could become a useful email requirements-gathering question.

Mostly a preference issue for me (as for everyone?)

One Gmail feature I really like is keeping unread on top no matter how old it is.
Other web options are not adequate, for example Yahoo mail doesn't even load the inbox (tab) properly the (increasingly) occasional times I use it.
My ISP provided email? I don't want to use it long term at the risk of changing ISPs and dealing with its spam flood requires extra software or is impossible

The only viable alternative is perhaps my own domain.

I guess we can split this into its own thread?

This is a provider discussion isn't it? not email client. Are you suggesting I use (for example) Yahoo pop3?

Of course it does, try my last 2 ISPs pop3 vs Gmail's pop3. Both using Thunderbird.

Speaking of old, you mentioned "Which mail client can't do that?" regarding unreads. How is that done in Thunderbird?

Click the "Read/Unread" column header. Works for me in latest Thunderbirds.

Doesn't work (in 17.0.4). Unread go to the bottom of the list.

Sort by date so as most recent on top of list.
Click the read/unread column header twice *should* work then (does here anyway)

Hmm. Yeah I knew Google was trimming, but it was stuff like "Google Cooking" and "5 misc features of that". This one feels different somehow, it had a different userbase. I'll have to give this a month to shake out as part of the bigger computing landscape and see what I think later.

So, what is a good web-based reader to replace GReader? I operate in environments where using a desktop client is often not allowed, as the software is not authorized.

I see newsblur, but wanted to see what other web-based, non-extension, solutions existed. Thoughts?

I'm trying out @40hz's suggestion re Sage. in the discussion: Re: Suggestions for a RSS reader
I've long since given up on something that's all-in-one.

These days I use the Sage extension in Firefox as my RSS reader and save what I want to keep to my Pocket (formerly ReadItLater) account or using Scrapbook depending on what it is.
None of the above have much in the way of bells & whistles.
Which is exactly the way I like it. YMMV.

FWIW I'm still using the FF+Sage+Pocket+Scrapbook combination. And I'm still perfectly happy with it.

(And I've tried every feed reader I could lay my grubby mitts on that ran on either Windows or Nix in the meantime. Have yet to find anything I like better or which offered some feature so compelling that I absolutely had to have it. YMMV )

I suggest you try Brief extension. I think it is much better than Sage.
