Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the US (which always falls on a Thursday).  It's the somewhat traditional start of the Christmas shopping season, and since nearly everyone has the day off (except the poor souls who have to work the stores) there are many 'door buster' sales.  Supposedly the 'Black' is a reference to the idea that it's the day that retail stores 'go in the black' (start making their profit) for the year.
