Wakoopa discontinuing service
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:22:11 AM »
One of those things that sits in the background and quietly does its thing and gives you some interesting metrics (and ways to discover new software), Wakoopa has been around for a while.  But an e-mail that I received bodes the end of that.

Dear Wakoopians,

We are sending you this email to share with you some sad news. Six years after our plan to build the ‘lastFM for software’, to make discovering software social, we are closing down Wakoopa Social. Wakoopa will continue to make cool products only this time focussed on the corporate research market.

Read all about why we made this difficult decision and what we are going to do to give you some of your data back.

We want to thank you all for the time and effort you have put into our product. Together we truly made discovering software social.

Best regards,
Wouter Broekhof, Founder & CTO

Yep, a pity. One of those classic "set-and-forget" services, been running for me for years. Damn.
Any decent alternative?

DC should find out if they can take over this service, would be an interesting addition to the site  :-\

That was a good farewell letter. Very well done.

Too bad they can't just sell it off to someone though. That would be nice to see the product passed on.

I just changed my password and then deleted my account. I don't want the old logs of my information being stolen or sold off or stored until some future merger/acquisition/whatever.

It's done... the logs are available for export at http://social.wakoopa.com if you want to download it until October 1, after which they will be deleted.

Dear Wakoopian,

This is a follow-up on our previous e-mail where we announced the closing of Wakoopa Social.

As of today you can download your personal export from the website http://social.wakoopa.com. This possibility will be around for three months, until October 1st. After that we will destroy all the data.

Maybe they should open source their product so that others can take over.

They're CSV, so the data at least is open.  But no replacement service... :(

They're CSV

Just for the record, they're actually TSV (tab-separated) files even though they have the CSV extension.

Oops.  Thanks for the clarification :)

No worries whatsoever.  :)  It just bugs me to no end when a CSV file is NOT comma-separated.  I've even seen apps spit out a so-called CSV file that is semi-colon-separated.  Good grief.   >:(

Yeah... I should have known.  But I haven't taken a look at the file- just downloaded it.

Still OT, but... YAY~!

I love tabs, and loathe any other separator as they are all ambiguous. In most cases, tabs are the best. Mind you, you could have:

҈҈ ҈

To separate... Now would you really want THAT? :P (Combining Cyrillic hundred thousands sign)

Or what? Commas are too common to use. Semi-colons are the same. Tabs are more reliable.

I still feel sorry for Wakoopa. :(
