The full list of submissions for new internet address endings has been published by the global organisation co-ordinating the expansion.

Requests to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) include .porn, .ninja, and .ferrari.

The BBC was among the applicants, applying for .bbc as an alternative to .co.uk and .com.

Several top-level domains have been applied for by more than one party, including .sex, .home and .diy.

Both the US drugmaker Merck & Co and its German rival Merck KGaA appear to have applied for the .merck ending, which may trigger an auction process.

However the .uk manager, Nominet, looks likely to secure .wales and .cymru after no-one filed identical claims.

Likewise the Dot Scot Registry was the only organisation to apply for .scot and the League of Arab States the only body to claim .arab.

Wait...What?!

Seriously BBC...not only do you FORCE us to pay for a TV license for a channel most people don't watch (Which you also claim is "Freeview")...now that money is being used for frivolous things such as this. This is getting out of hand. I am no longer paying for a TV license...sue me if you want...I couldn't care less any more. You lie about not advertising or making money elsewhere, so why the hell do we still get forced to buy a license? If I started a TV station tomorrow, and demanded everybody in the country pay me £X per month or I will SUE them, OFCOM would shut me down in a heartbeat...Talk about backwards. You have gone off the rails now...So...in summery, Dear BBC, You no longer get ANY money off me.

--The following is what I sent to the BBC directly--

"£118,800 for an Application for a frivolous gTLD is beyond ridiculous. This is License payer money that you have used, and will be using more and more if you succeed with it. Due to this, I will no longer be purchasing a TV license as you are simply drinking away my money. That money would be just as well used by my local RSPCA. I do not watch your channel, I do not like your services and I do not agree with your practices. This is your formal notice that all future monies I would have spent on a TV license, will now be going to the RSPCA in Ramsbottom, Lancashire. On behalf of all the Animals, Thanks!"

On another front, this is one of those campaigns where they're gonna try to get all the naughty sites to be forced to use a .sex extension, to make it easier "to protect the children".

It's also gonna make Phishing a horrible risk because some scammer will nab domains like donationcoder.ferrari or something. "What? You mean I don't get a free Ferrari when I make a donation of any size?"

:) and  :P

They say that the ungodly amounts required are to filter out non-serious inquiries, but it seems more like it's to restrict new gTLDs to corporations only.

Raise your hand if you have $185,000 extra to spend on a domain... :P

Didn't think so... ;)

Google applied for over 100 names of such domain names including .youtube, .music, .android, .boo, .and, .dad, and .new, .cpa, .esq, .phd, .prof, .baby, .kids, .mom, .dad, and .pet among others. According to the Washington post, the costs surpassed $18 million dollars. Amazon also applied for 76 names that included .amazon, .app, .author, .book, .buy, .news, .cloud, .dev and .music.  Amazon and Google both went after .game, .movie, and .wow.

Apple Corp. only applied for one: .apple.

Other applications from major companies include .abc, .yahoo, and .bmw.

I don't see this ending well. When private companies control cognates (root words like "book" or "apple" or "food"), it's simply too open to abuse. It really needs to have some kind of FRAND attached to it. Meh... This will go the same insane route as patents and copyright IP.
