Microsoft takes on Dropbox with major SkyDrive update
« on: April 23, 2012, 09:31 PM »
Looks like Microsoft may have just caught up and leapfrogged Dropbox: Microsoft takes on Dropbox with major SkyDrive update

I am awaiting the apparently soon-to-be-announced Google docs upgrade so that I can compare the two (SkyDrive vs. Gdocs).
At the moment, most of my docs are in Gdocs, with a few much larger files on SkyDrive. I used the latter as Gdocs was too restrictive on file sizes at the time.
At the moment the FREE 25Gb availability on SkyDrive looks hard to beat.
I might stop syncing my documents to Gdocs and put them on SkyDrive instead. Trouble is, I have found Gdocs pretty useful.
Still, it's nice to have choices.    :)

"GDrive" is Google's version, to be announced any day now. I love all this storage; the more companies offering free products, the more users can be selective. Go Microsoft.

Hey! Thanks for that.
I didn't realise you had to get the offer whilst it was available. I assumed I already had 25Gb. Huh!

Yes, and thanks for the tip. However when I logged into my account (which I haven't done in years) it said I was already at 25GB, but needed to accept the offer/lock-in the size before they dropped it down to the new 7GB limit (Sorry I forgot to grab SS).

I wish you had grabbed a SS, because when I went into my SkyDrive account, I was told that I was using almost 18 GB of my 25 GB allotment, and there was nothing about accepting an offer.  I was uneasy, but then I read what Microsoft said on its "loyalty" page (whose link lanux128 provided above): "If you were using close to this amount before the latest update, we’ve automatically upgraded your storage already . You can always see how much storage you have by signing into SkyDrive and checking the storage meter."  So I'm assuming/hoping that my 25 GB account will remain at 25 GB without my having to do anything.  If I'm wrong, I hope someone will let me know.

Note this upgrade only applies to older accounts - I set up an account for someone last week and the 25Gb upgrade does not appear on their account.

Also not if you want to use the app on Mac you need OS X 10.7 - it won't install on Snow Leopard.

Has anyone been successful in downloading and installing their application on XP?

I am getting "not a valid Win32 application" errors when attempting to run the installer. I have downloaded it countless times, with different browsers, same issue every time.

@cyberdiva: i read somewhere that if you are using more than 5GB of the storage and your account will be auto-upgraded. no opt-in necessary. anyway, i'm posting the screenie i took earlier..

XP is not supported. Too bad too, I have friends still running XP that would like this.

Glad I looked at the whole thread then.

I have XP, so I guess I don't get to play!

Interesting bit on upgrading storage... I had a few live ids hooked to my same account.  I switched over to each, and each has a separate storage allottment.  Now I have 25GB on each...!

I had 2 IDs, and now MS recognises neither of them  :-\
I didn't use them, so no loss really, and not tempted to sign up with MSN/hotmail now.

I had mine for MSDN and xbox live.  I abandoned MSN and hotmail long ago.

And speaking of MSDN, there's also an offer on Azure with space for MSDN subscribers.

hehe Nice.

I've got another older account I can play with when I get home. I'll try to remember to SS it if I get the same odd info ... Which I should because there's nothing in it either. My office account (mentioned above) only had one 200kb file in it ... So why it was already pushed to 25GB is rather confusing.

Looking at SkyDrive, I see a public folder, but cannot use it as a website. I use my public DropBox folder as my website. Just edit, and changes are uploaded. I like the 25GB of SkyDrive though, and with GDrive coming out not sure which one I'll go with.  :-\

Okay, got a SS this time...but it doesn't really make any sense. The top says I'm already at 25GB...but I need to "lock it in". The bottom (left) says I was at only 7GB. *Shrug* ...It's up to 25GB now through. :)

^ That's what I got on each eligible id.  My other id's didn't show that at all.
