Before I had Vista/Win 7, I wanted a quick way to get to the target file of a shortcut. Instead of having to right click on the shortcut, choose properties, then find target. I made an app called Find Target that adds a Find Target item to the right click context menu of a shortcut. This is for Windows XP, but may work on 95 and 98. Hope you find it just as useful as I did. The setup file is attached.

Works in win 7 x64 as well - very handy! So the app opens Explorer, is there any generic way to have it open the location in an Explorer alternative like xplorer2, xyplorer, or what have you? |

That would be cool - I'm not sure how the alternative file managers intercept calls that would normally go to Explorer but anything that can help them do that would be nice |

What I am going to do is allow you to select an alternate file manager to use. You'll be able to select your file manager and input any optional parameters. That way when you choose "Find Target" from the menu (if your file manager accepts parameters) it should open the folder containing the target of the shortcut. Here is a screen shot of the settings.  |

Well, this functionality is built into XYplorer for years, also for junctions. As tooltip, and also in the context menu with options to copy the target name and to go to the target (within XYplorer). So no need for an extra tool for happy XY users.  |

Ok. I added the option to choose your own file manager. Since I only use explorer I am unable to test it. Please give it a try and let me know. I have updated the attachment on my first post.

Since I installed Find Target, every time I boot up I get a "Find Target" box that pops up saying "Invalid Shortcut" with one option to click - "OK".
What What? How do I keep this from happening?

It's not running in the background, checked the startups with two different programs. I'll un/reinstall it and let you know tomorrow... Update: Well I totally uninstalled and then installed it again. Same thing happens on every boot. On another note, when I uninstalled it I found that it left the folder and all the files intact on my C: drive. What good is an uninstaller that don't uninstall?  |
