DC going offline to protest SOPA on Jan 18
« on: January 17, 2012, 05:31 PM »
We are going offline on January 18 to protest the SOPA bill.

I always wonder how much good such things do, but we stand with our brothers and sisters at Wikipedia, and they have determined that a blackout protest is important -- so we will join with them.

You can read more about the blackout here: http://en.wikipedia....mmary_and_conclusion

A day off for reflection, civil protest, and network maintenance is never a bad thing.  :)

Let's get back together the day after to discuss.   :Thmbsup:

Can someone explain the logic to me? :huh:

In opposition of legislation that could force the shutdown of parts the internet, we're going to voluntarily shutdown parts of the internet? :huh: :tellme:

I don't like SOPA/PIPA and I'm opposed to them, for sure. But I just don't understand how voluntarily submitting to what you're opposing is really any useful sign of opposition. :-\

That would be like opposing a war by signing up to join the military. Or showing your disapproval of McDonald's by having everybody buy a Big Mac with fries and a shake. It just doesn't make sense to me.

The point is, to show the effect it will have...It's a last resort.

If you did one or the other as a means to an act of defiance (Selling military secrets/Throwing the Big Macs at the store)... :P

While it may not really make much sense to shut down DC (in that one small act), I think it's a good thing for sites like Wikipedia to shut down and show people what SOPA and PIPA and PROTECT IP and that other draconian one whose name I forget, will give them.

Shutting down DC in protest is a good sign of solidarity.

I think all of us here "get it" and understand that censorship is bad, and free speech is good -- but that's not the point.

I think mouser would have to say exactly what his motivations are, but as I see it, it looks like a show of solidarity.

Think about it this way, if one person were to protest, oh, say plastic bottles by throwing 1 plastic bottle on the steps of city hall, it would be pretty meaningless. Get 10,000 people to do it, and you have a statement.

If we all add our 1 grain of sand to the pile, we'll build a mountain.

Bingo! StoicJoker.com going bye bye too. I assume we're to use the redirector script Renegade posted (I can't find it now), yes??

Duh! (page 2) Found it

Date based redirector (nice... :)) added to my index page.

Just a quick note/caution... The copy & paste somewhere along the line ended up encoding a dash incorrectly as a different kind of dash, which broke the script. I've corrected that and here it is:

Code: Javascript [Select]
  1. <script type="text/javascript">
  2. <!--
  3.
  4. var curDate = new Date();
  5. if (curDate.getFullYear() == '2012' && curDate.getMonth() == '0' && curDate.getDate() == '18')
  6. {
  7. window.location = 'http://protestsopa.org/';
  8. }
  9. //-->
  10. </script>

I'm not certain if the problem was in what I posted in the other thread... Anyways...

I've got it in my sites now.

SOLIDARITY~! ;D

It's a last resort.

Never say die, though. Sometimes things need to get (much) worse before they can start getting better.

The IRC channel will still be open for anyone who wants to chat. Grab yourself an IRC client (like mirc) and join the efnet network, channel #donationcoder.

Please go to Wikipedia and tweet/FB/G+ their redirect msg to make it trend.
(You need to hit an individual article for the redirect msg to show up, it doesn't seem to show on the main page.)

And.. we're back!

That was a very long 24 hours offline -- felt like a month to me.

And by the way it seems like the internet protests have had an effect: http://arstechnica.c...onents-in-senate.ars

Welcome back.

Probably can expect a SOPA/PIPA 'successor' after the US election

I also fail to see the value of this, but I guess it makes a statement of sorts

I can't help wondering if there's a better way of registering a protest - I have no idea if it's possible, but is it possible to block access to certain domains (government, media, RIAA, etc).  While it could be seen as tit for tat, it's also a demonstration of what might be expected if the legislation goes through...

just a thought

Looks like a lot of flip-flopping there... I think that's a list of politicians that really shouldn't be re-elected. They're doing the same back-peddling as GoDaddy -- they're not sincere.

Even the snakes that co-sponsored it are flipping.

Given that a lot of illegal video is captured from the studios own streaming websites - would a simple solution to reducing piracy be for ISPs to block the studio websites at DNS level? Of course the studio wouldn't get the revenue for the streaming either - but that is a minimal side effect given that they are so worried about privacy.
