For the Facebook Haters ;)
« on: January 01, 2012, 12:44 PM »
I know some people will love this:

http://mashable.com/.../28/occupy-facebook/

Occupy Wall Street activists are developing a social network called The Global Square for the generation of protesters.

“We don’t want to trust Facebook with private messages among activists,” developer Ed Knutson told Wired.

Knutson is helping build the network, which will unite members of Occupy movements across the globe. As more of the physical encampments are evicted across the U.S., digital meeting places will be of increased importance, explains a November RoarMag blog post.

Looks like an interesting special use for a social network.

I don't like the way that a Facebook account is becoming expected.  For example, both my local library and the church in the village have groups on Facebook.

I'm particularly annoyed by the new arm-twisting (blackmailing?) going on in software circles where you're now required to "like" a piece of software on Facebook (or Tweet it) before you're allowed to download a lite or evaluation copy.

I'm surprised Facebook even allows that since it devalues the whole "liking" process.

Same goes for only being allowed to join something via your Facebook account. One place even had this helpful bit of information if you didn't have a Facebook account and still wanted to join. It said: Still want to become a member but don't have a Facebook account? Click here.

Cute.

Good point.  Then it becomes a bit like all the "awards" that some software sites trumpet, completely meaningless.

did it once, and undid the "Like" after - but probably wouldn't bother again

Google+ seems to have solved this particular problem: you are not allowed to "“run contests, sweepstakes, offers, coupons or other such promotions”  on a Google+ page, however you can link to a contest on your own page.

(Note this is a link to some random site I have never heard of, and their spin in that they prefer Facebook because there is more opportunity to annoy their customers.)

I think someone posted a Dilbert cartoon in another thread - the gist of which was that Dilbert wanted a co-worker to become a "frienditute"  ;)

I don't hate Facebook. I just say it is wrong to use and spread it.
(And to force using it, e.g. Spotify. Lol. Grooveshark ftw.)

And to force using it, e.g. Spotify.

While spotify does have FB integration, they don't force you to use it.  I use it all the time, and I don't have it linked to FB.

You need a Facebook account to register. They started it a few months ago.
