Hmm, that's unfortunate. :)

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that SnagIt does a good job.

So will we also be able to save the uncombined pages as individual files?

Would be easy to add if that was desired -- still not sure why one would want to do that.

I've run into one very unfortunate hiccup that is going to require me to write some more advanced code.

Even so, I hope to have a standalone (MiniCap-based) test implementation of Scrolling Capture tool released in the next couple of days.

Message me if you want to try an early standalone version of Scrolling Capture tool.

I guess i will post the alpha testing version publicly.. Be prepared for some pain if you try it -- people are reporting mixed success and confusion.

This is a MiniCap-based test -- not a full version of Screenshot Captor.

Download: https://www.donation...wnloads/MiniCaps.zip

Normally I ask people to report problems, but I think in this case it might be better for morale to ask people to report unexpected successes.

NOTE 1: Pay attention to the options prior to capture regarding horizontal captures, and max scrolls -- you may want to turn of horizontal captures and expand vertical scroll limit.

NOTE 2: For some applications (firefox for example), you need to click on the web page content before engaging capture or scrolls will fail to scroll.

I did get one successfull (auto) scroll of this thread in IE9 (after about 6 tries) with the default settings. It seems to be having trouble hanging on to the browser window.

I tried the manual capture, but it stitched it together a bit funny. The last frame wanted to repete rather badly (ok/done option maybe?)

  • Where you'd want to use some other panorama software to stitch it together?
  • Or desperately need a different kind of stitch (not seamless) (that's just a crap reason, wanted to write at least 2 good ones)
  • Can't paste the combined image into another document/cms/blog, but the parts would fit just about right (MS Word anyone?)

Oh, and for the first reason it would be necessary to save the raw, unaltered, images/parts, and for the last reason it's required to save the images after the margins and overlaps are applied, but without the actual stitching has happened :tellme:

Hm, With FireFox 9 it's improved (from the previous beta) on the overlap detection, but the horizontal scroll is way out of line, in fact I have to disable that to get it to do the margins and overlap at least a bit OK. When leaving the vertical scrolls on the default of 10 pages, it kind of gets confused. Setting it to the actual 3 is perfect ofcourse, but 4 or 5 it can handle. The margins are still troublesome though, all but the bottom margin is way off, like a top margin of 19 where 86 is needed, and a left and right margin of 2 where 9 is perfect.
After correcting the margins the Guess Overlap is perfect though.

Internet Explorer 8: (I still refuse to upgrade to crap-o-rama 9 )
Same issues with selecting for Start Capture as Stoic had:
Screenshot - 18-01-2012 , 00_15_38.png
Ctrl-Click is apparently caught by IE to select text. Solution (by mouser) is to use the gear button, but that's kinda out of reach with a maximized window :-[
Selecting the IE8 internal browser area, and doing a scrolled capture, disabling horizontal scroll though (same issues as with FireFox), and leaving vertical scrolling at the default of 10, works just fine. It grabs 3 pages as expected (DC frontpage). Guess Margins did a fine job. Guess Overlap merged it all together just fine.
Doing a longer page capture, I had (could have been expected) to increase the vertical scrolls to 20 to fetch it all.
Guess Margins and Guess Overlap was almost right, mostly off-by-one, so some textlines where a bit compressed.
When setting the vertical scrolls to the expected number of pages (17 in my case) both guesses where exactly right! (And was that unexpected?)

Capturing IE8's outside Windows frame, it requires the method to be changed to 'Simulate Keypresses (PgUp/PgDn)' to get the scrolling to work, but the Guess Margins is off by a few centimeters (instead of pixels) on the top and bottom margins, and the left and right margins by about 6 pixels, but after correcting that and setting the near correct number of 'pages' beforehand, the Guess Overlap is perfect. The method of selecting the inner page only is way better.

It might be worthwile to 'pre-detect' the actual number of pages that are in the scrollable object, and suggesting that automatically :tellme:

Scroll Capturing a (wide) readme file from NotePad++ was rather un-eventfull, it captured the page in the first try, and with correct margins/overlap both maximized and non-maximized. So not much to say there......

(Hm, a bit longer story then I thought )

the new beta should show the button even on maximized window now doesn't it?

For some captures, like a forum thread, where it can't detect when its reached the bottom due to animated images or something, make sure you adjust the TRIM values to get rid of duplicate horizontal or vertical pages, before you click to guess margins and overlaps.  That is, if you find that the final page is duplicated several times without being detected, manually adjust the trim to fix this before continuing.  Otherwise it can get confused.  This should only happen in scenarios where the final page has something on it that changes over time.

The gear button showed up fine for me, and ran the scroll. But the dialog didn't advance, so it just (appeared to) redid the capture and only gave me the top of the page. Ctrl click worked fine at all points, but I only got a full capture once after bouncing back and forth through the dialogs a few times.

Probably because I phrased it badly...  :D

When I click on the gear, and select "Capture Now", it does the scroll (and presumably the capture), and then pops open the define capture settings dialog. The dialog only has an "Ok, begin scrolling capture" button. I'd assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that it should just jump to the save options dialog, after having been told (via button menu) to "Capture now".

Holy crap did it just do a weird capture while I was playing with it just now. It appears to be a full scroll of the page ... But it's five pages wide..!?!

Oh yeah, I think I made it mad.  :o  The capture is (9.53MB) 6190 x 8470, and just repeats the bottom section for the full height of the page...five pages wide.

that definitely should NOT happen.. im not even sure how it could..   well if you hit escape it could happen.

the default setting tries to do a horizontal scroll of 5 pages wide.  if the pages dont change it will normally crop those away.. but any change in content (for example an animation on the page) and you will get extra copies because it will think the page has scrolled.  the safest thing in this case is to turn off horizontal scroll if there is no horizontal scroll to perform.

One tip to try in some apps is to use "by single lines" scrolling mode, which can give much more overlap between captures -- making it easier for the program to guess overlap values.  If you do this, use the "ByRows Mult" value to advance many lines per capture, which will reduce memory consumption and increase the Maximum scrolls value.  I might try to add some code to best guess which pre-capture settings to use..

I had some success with a vertical-scrolling-only situation in Firefox.  After making it through successfully, I feel much less in the dark about how to use the functionality and appreciate being able to tweak :)

I ran into memory issues trying different capturing softwares with a bigger project. Would be a unique feature to have.
