Strange proposal from Macecraft
« on: December 15, 2011, 03:31 AM »
Hi,

I received yesterday the following mail from Macecraft.  The trouble I have with it is that the "organization" they are referring to seems rather a political party than a regular non profit organization.

What do you think ?

Excerpts of the mail below :

We are doing a very special Xmas promotion: Donate money (for example $10)
to a Finnish non-profit organization and you'll receive a fully working
license for jv16 PowerTools 2011, and the same license will also work with
the upcoming 2012 version.

The organization is called Edistyspuolue. It's a non-profit organization
which promotes and defends civil liberties in Finland.

You are entitled to participate because you have downloaded a free trial
version of our product and gave your email address.

You can donate either with PayPal or by wire transfer
1) To donate with PayPal, please send the donation to
<e-mail removed>

...

If you made a donation, please send an email to
<adress removed>@macecraft.com stating what name and email address you want
your license to be generated with and sent to. A license will be sent to
you via email within two business days of your donation (usually within a
few minutes).

Note: This promotion is valid only for 48 hours!

Thank you!
Best Regards,
Macecraft Software

Jouni Vuorio (author&owner of Macecraft JV16) is Finnish, and likes to support good ideas:

Macecraft Software was officially established in 2003 when the author converted jv16 PowerTools to shareware and continued the development as work instead of just a hobby.

Philanthropy:
Macecraft Software regularly donates money to charity, to non-profit organizations and to authors of high quality freeware and open source software.

Regarding the Finnish edistyspuolue; well, yes, it is registered as a political party, but...
The party's name is old but was abandoned by the original party who took a new name. There were 31 people at the "new" edistyspuolue's last meeting which also was their first meeting, 23 Oct 2011, when they started the new party. Their acclaimed goal is to secure freedom for each person. However, their written agenda still is this simple; they don't yet have a political program.

My concern is that I am sure many extremist parties and lobbyists also promote "freedom", so there is no way knowing who is behind unless you live in the corresponding country, and even so.

I wouldn't mind donating, but not to a polical party which I don't know which idea they really support.  "Freedom" is just too vague. IMHO.
