Yes some icons are small, they are non vista enabled icons. I should scale them but I haven't find an api that tell me what size the icon is. That sound stupid but I haven't found a good solution yet. I have stupid solutions still, so I might switch to that as a fallback.

I wish you luck in your quest :)

I'm not sure what you mean with arrow key navigation for directories ?

From FARR's version history:

Version 2.00.04 - December 20, 2006
        ...
•   Added ability to go into and pop up out of directories while in the results panel using arrow keys LEFT and RIGHT

From the QS document (paraphrased a bit) mentioned earlier:

If a folder is in the object pane, use right arrow to navigate into it. Then the object pane changes to a results list of all the child files and folders.  Since it’s common to separate folders with / it’s an equivalent key to right arrow to navigate.
...
Back up a folder hierarchy by typing left arrow or ? (i.e., a shifted / on a US keyboard). This can backup all the way to the root directory

Does it make sense now?

Is it slightly unresponsive for very short period of time or long like seconds or minutes like hanged ?

It can definitely be for more than 1 minute...

I've added the . for text too. I don't know if you spotted that.

Thank you!  I had :)

Thank for spotting navigation details in the QS doc. I just realise that I use tab for completion because I'm used to, but I don't think that it's very useful to do completion in a QS like UI except for folders navigation. We can probably keep tab for pane navigation and left, right or / for navigation inside folders. I'll try these settings.

I'm considering switching the name of the project for the more "Qtapult". QSLL is already taken for unrelated things, and I like this idea more and it sounds more fun.

What do you think of it ?

do you mean Qatapult ?
I think the Q works fine (with a vowel after it at any rate), it generally (always?) gets pronounced as a hard C or like a K.

btw forgot to say: I like it

I would have like it pronounced Queue-tapult, but may be the 'a' is better ?

ah okay,
then it would be better spelt like one of these:
  • Q-tapult
  • Quetapult
  • Queuetapult
  • Q Tapult

you're getting into weirdly-spelt-name territory there :) - from the point of view of ease of remembering, I wouldn't recommend any of those - but I dont know how important that aspect is to you?

you could also play on the Q-t thing and spell it cuteapult or cuetapult - either of those would work better than the "Q" versions imo

edit/ i dunno though...

The Q is here to keep some ascendance to Quicksilver, however Cuteapult is a good find  :-*

It looks great! I'd be interested to try it once it is a bit more mature but I love the UI already. Well done!

After reflexion, I think I'll go with Qatapult, your first proposition tomos, as you like it it's even better.

vitalyb... what would you like to see the most in the near future ?

:)

Looks nice - I finally getting around to trying it :-[

Some start-up problems/requests:
[1] it seems to have a few focus problems - originally when I started it, it didnt have focus at all - I typed, nothing showed, I had to click on it and then it works. I could not escape out of it - these both seem to have resolved themselves through use :) will report again if a problem
[2] would be nice if space+shift worked - I find it easier to type than shift+space (I'm no typist)
[3] would be nice if I could alt+tab away from the app (FWIW, I think FARR closes when I alt+tab away)
[4] would be nice if I could select typed text using Ctrl+Shift+Arrowkeys

Win7 64bit

EDIT/ my focus problems could possibly have been related to trying out alt+tab. Even though it stays on top, it no longer has focus...

Icons are pretty!
 (see attachment in previous post)
...but some are small :)

icons are all large here - but small icons often enlarged - i.e. poor pixelly quality (e.g. FARR as in ewemoa's screenshot)
(just reporting FWIW - I know you're aware of the problem, but I didnt have same results as ewemoa)

I'm still not using it actively myself, my work computer is still XP for a few days, I should change this week. I'll try to make a fix for XP too, it's too bad that it can't work for a icon issue.

The blurry icons are an improvement I made over the previous behavior, I found an ugly way to detect icon size and scale it. It's a bit better ihmo, I think that Quicksilver does it as well.

Thanks for pointing focus issues, I think I'll just hide it when it lose focus for the moment, it should make things much clearer. It would be nice to have a fully usable piece of software for nany release ;).

I'll add some customization for hotkey, shift+space is not even my personal favorite (my favorite is still binded to FARR ). space+shift is not really possible because space would create a space in all apps before invoking Qatapult. You can also use autohotkey to bind any key to shift+space temporarily.

I'm not sure what you mean with the possibility of selecting text. I don't think I'll allow to select text from the UI, I'd prefer to add commands to paste it and use it in various way. What's your need for that ?

Stepping in and speaking for myself -- it's likely I'd use this type of thing for editing paths -- full paths to files, directories, and URLs.

I havent even started using it for paths yet but can see that it would be a big help there.

sometimes there was text there I wanted to remove, say I search for something & it's not there, I then have to use the back key to delete before I start again. I'm just so used to using keys like Shift+Home or Ctrl+Shift+Arrowkey to select text in order to delete or cut or copy...

I had the impression that quicksilver was hiding what was really typed and shows keys by underlining characters in results. Showing the typed text was and still is a sort of shortcut for making the developpement easier, but I was hoping to remove that just as in QS.

I'm still not sure what you mean ewemoa : I tend to navigate to path from c:\ and completing and navigating with arrows, I can't figure out were I'd need to edit the current path ? Occasionally within FARR I change a subdirectory from a path I use but this is very rare. So may be all you need is the left arrow to navigate one folder up and the ctrl+shift+backspace or esc to clear the request ? May be I'm just reluctant to add an editable field on a transparent window, which is going to be difficult (a kind of instinctive programmer defense ? )

For copying and pasting, I'll probably add copy, and paste as command and probably also copy/paste filename, as well as various subparts of path and url.

I had the impression that quicksilver was hiding what was really typed and shows keys by underlining characters in results.

That sounds familiar for the most part.

I think for text mode (entered by . or '), it is worth having the ability to use key sequences like ctrl+arrow, ctrl+shift+arrow, etc.

For reference, from the QS manual:

URLs in the first pane can be changed into text by typing . or '.

I think something similar was possible with files and folders.  What comes up in my mind is that after typing . or ' when the selected pane holds a file or folder, text mode is entered with the path to the file or folder being presented in the pane.

IIRC there were other situations where QS used text mode too -- sending text via IM is something that also is mentioned in the manual.

I think it was also possible to type the escape key after being in text mode to exit text mode and the selected pane would then appropriately change to reflect this (e.g. if one had edited a file's path in text mode, exiting text mode with escape would then display a file object -- if the modified path corresponded to an existing file).

Wow, totally awesome to get noticed that fast (my second time on ghack too ;) ), and a little bit scary since Qatapult is still very very beta. Thanks for spotting that rgdot.

ecaradec, if you want to make any more changes/updates to the program before releasing it, let me know. It's a great app, and we want to get it screencasted as soon as possible. The way mouser and I know these apps are ready is when the authors change "Pledge" and/or "Early Beta" in the OP title to include the word Release.

Thanks kyrathaba, I think I'll stay with this release for the nany launch. I have a lot of changes on the launchpad, but it may not be smart to send a release now as I won't be able to make any fix. If you can, add a link to the qatapult website.

I'll change the title.
