NANY 2012 - Pledge & Final Release: Stick A Note
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:34 AM »
Dear Friends,

Due to working in lots of project in different platform, both at office and home, I urgently need a sticky note for a given document, program, website etc. Better if it could sync with Simplenote web server. I also found discussion in DC here on similar subject.

Now I searched and tried GumNotes http://www.gumnotes.com/, which does what I want, but...after two days it is not working. All my notes have vanished and giving error "can not connect Simplenote" though same password works if I connect from browser.

Next I tried ResophNotes http://www.resoph.com/ResophNotes/, more or less like QuickNote http://www.quicknote.de/ and can sync with simplenote. But can not mark note to a doc/prog like GumNotes.

Next I tried Stickes http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/, which can mark note to a doc/prog but the logic is not good as like GumNotes.

I have more or less decided to make one for myself and use ResophNotes's text file option to sync with Simplenote.

Before I embark, please throw light to me to see another free one which does all these and may be more, and I will embrace it.

Embarked and brought the fruit below  :)

NANY 2012 Entry Information

Application Name Stick A Note
Version 2.1.0
Short Description Stick a text note to a window of program or document. The note shows only on
that window and moves with it.
Supported OSes WinXp and above
Web Page https://sites.google...com/site/stickanote/
Download Link https://sites.google...anote/home/download/
Author Anand K Gupta

Description
I use many programs which has one good feature, which I like, compare to others.
Now it so happens that the developer of the program names the exe in a small
way. If it is a portable then it is near to impossible for me to find out the
program whose that feature I remember and need it.

Also it may so happens that I found a 6 month old program on my computer and do
not remember what feature is better in it, or did I even liked it.

I need some sort of note to put against each program where I mention which
feature I like and can use in future.

I searched but none available free once could do do the job satisfactorily.

I developed Stick A Note.

Features
Focusless note.
Note moves with window.
Saves notes in text files.
Auto hides or shows if window is inactive or active.
Hotekey toggle show/hide note.
Planned Features
Search in notes.

Screenshots
SAN Image 1.png

Usage
Installation
Unzip all the files into a directory you want, then launch it.

Using the Application
After run the program will sit in the system tray. Press Win+n key to show a note for the active window.

Uninstallation
Delete all files and remove folder.

Regards,

Anand

Hehehe! A very wise question! I don't use them, so I can't make a recommendation for you, but I can certainly appreciate the predicament! :D

Thanks @Renegade for understanding me.

But looks like 'mum's word' is taken by everyone so that I embark. Hope I will be able to bring some treasure.  :)

Anand

See the fruit of journey above (original post modified).

Still long way to go, but wanted to get it out in open, as deadline is closing.

Now to sit and look at the feedback of all Apps I have received till now, please wish me strength, badly need it.

Anand

Anand - I'm testing now and SaN seems to be working fine, at least I haven't come across any bugs yet.

Will there be the possibility of moving the notes around - or is there no point to that ? And, for me anyway, it would be ideal to be able to type directly in the note, if that's not possible then perhaps clicking anywhere on the note should bring up the editor.

Thanks.

Hi anandcoral, have never used this type of app but always wanted to

Which file should we download?
(current link leads to a download page with choices)
OK found it
https://sites.google...kanote/home/download

the link in OP (https://sites.google...stickanote/download/) is missing the home bit.

1] In what way does it associate with a file - when the file is selected in Explorer, or when the file is launched?
EDIT/ Sorry, didnt read closely enough :)

2] changing hotkey to Win+Y doesnt work here (German keyboard)

@joiwind, thank you for checking SAN. I have noted the "note move around option" and will try to implement it, but editing will be in separate window. The reason is, SAN is not a general sticky note, but more related to program/process for which user is writing notes. There will be info. for the program window, along with option to search in earlier notes. All these will be difficult to put in a small note area.

@tomos, sorry for the download trouble, rectified the link, thanks. Win+Y shd work, May be German keyboard is saving something else in ini. Please check the ini file, it shd have "hotkey=#Y" without quotes. Also note that you will have to 'check/enable' the Win checkbox and just press 'y' in the box. Please revert if you still face problem.

Anand

Sounds pretty cool.  I've always been dismayed that these sticky apps are never compatible with Dropbox.  (i.e. in such a way that my notes automatically get synced b/t home and work computers.)

yes @kunkel321, I wanted this sync system, for my office and home to have the same notes available. I used the 'ResophNotes' data folder and it worked fine.

Presently I am too bogged down with my project works, that I am surprised why in the world all work are just coming now when I need some free time for myself ! Maybe it is the thankful wave of DC which is giving me more work !!  :)

Anand

Does it make any sense to be able to save the note with a simple save of the document? For example I attached a test one to a text doc, but then when I re-open the text doc the note is gone.

I'd also wonder if it makes sense to be able to Right-Click the note and save it as its own item. I save a bunch from my other sticky program and email them out (as pictures, I do screen grabs with that program.)

Tao, the SAN note gets saved as soon as you press 'ok' button in 'edit note' window.

The note is saved with the title of the window. So if you open a txt file, say 'biodata' in notepad.exe, the title will be 'biodata - Notepad', which is saved along with the note.

Next time you you press the hotkey for the SAN note in notepad, the title must match to show the note, i.e. 'biodata' text file must be opened.

If you want the SAN note to show for any text file opened, then edit the title to only 'notepad' then it will show regardless of the text file opened in notepad.

Please revert if any problem.

Regards,

Anand

Oh I see, I didn't understand that you have to re-hit "Win-N" (or current hotkey) to re-enable the note. That makes sense, in a way, that you might not want all notes immediately showing in sensitive situations.

On my Windows 7 machine with a high screen resolution it looks like the OK button is falling off. Any advice or maybe an update?

Thanks Tao for the feedback. I will check in Win7 and rectify it.

Also I am changing the hotkey define option to more straight forward one and will flash tray icon if the window has a note, so that user get to know about it.

Anand

Yes the dpi problem is a problem for me as well as TaoPhoenix.
I hope you can fix it soon, I really like this program!
Could not save any notes till after making a note, I press tab and enter and it saves it.
I don't know what else is down there for editing or deleting if I need to.

Could someone post a screenshot of the edit window, so I know what I'm tabbing to?

Thanks for a cool program anandcoral!

Nothing to be sorry about, that 's for sure!
Thanks for the screenshot.
I could have changed my dpi to see it myself, but desktop icons get messed up.
My icon saver works good sometimes and sometimes not.

I found where the notes are stored, it would be nice to have a delete button,
but doing it from inside the target folder is fine as well.

Thanks

mouser and kyrathaba thanks for appreciation. In fact the reviews have made me to stop my project works and finish the points which I planned for SAN before close of NANY 2012.

Hope to upload the same before midnight.

Anand
