Pendrive not prompting me to choose an action!!!???
« on: November 07, 2011, 06:47 AM »
Hello, i have a 8 GB pendrive, when i insert it on the USB port it doesn't pwompt me "Open the folder " | " View Imagest" etc etc: as it does normally.
At one time i had formatted my pendrive from the command prompt with this switches
h:\ format /q/x/ h:
something like this. After the format was complete it stopped prompting me to " Open the folder " , i went in the properties and set the check box to " Prompt me to choose an action",  but still it doesn't prompt me anything.

Please see the snapshot, i dont have any viruses in my pendrive.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 it is possible to disable AutoRun for drives by using the Control Panel. If you open the Control Panel and chooses Hardware and sound and then AutoPlay, a dialog box that can be used to change settings for AutoPlay and AutoRun is opened

Tried the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.2.3 but still getting the same results, it will make my system vulnerable to autorun.inf viruses, hope you are understanding.
Does it mean now my pendrive is useless, i mean what good is it when it keeps opening itself, may someone has this problem.

Autorun for removable drives is disabled in XP onwards - Microsoft rolled out an update about March, KB971029.

The reason was to stop viruses being spread via autorun.inf.

You're using USB Safely Remove - are you sure you haven't set it to automatically explore inserted media?

EDIT: Sorry, I've misread your post - you want to know why you're not getting the prompt for an Action.

What OS are you running?
Have you tried it on another computer and does it do the same thing?

Also, try this tool from Microsoft: AutoPlay Repair (Only good for 2003 and XP)

Well i am using Winxp and i noticed this similar behaviour when i ran in one of my friends PC.  I tried what you suggested the Autoplay repair and the KB971029 update.
I have been having this problem when i ran that command.
