Need some video card buying advice
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:11 PM »
I'm specing out a new gaming computer because my current computer is kind of old, and I can't really play newer games on it very well.
I've got everything picked out that I want, but I don't really know exactly what I am looking at when it comes to graphics cards, so I have two picked out
I was wondering which one would be better of the two.

the first one is the GeForce GTX 560
the second one, and is the one I am leaning towards more is the GeForce GTX 550 Ti
As far as I can tell, the 550 card has better specs than the 560 card, except for the stream processors and the memory interface.

Which card would you guys suggest? or if you can find another card that is better (preferably nvidia) that is not more expensive than the 560 ($189.99)

(on a side note, I wish they would switch the free offers. the card I kind of want more comes with a free benchmark tool, while the other comes with Arkham City, which I really want)

Graphics processing is a highly parallelized business. So the shader processor count is more important than the clock speed. The shader processor/texture mapping unit/render output unit counts of 550ti and 560 are respectively 192/32/24 and 336/56/32.

This alone effectively makes 560 the faster one. To top it off, the memory bus of 560 is apparently wider (192 vs 256 bits).

My educated guess is that on average 560 will provide roughly one thirds more FPS than 550ti.

If the price difference is not gonna hurt you much, get the faster one.

Well that helps me out a ton! I guess I am leaning more towards the 560 since it sounds better than.

The more I looked at it (also thanks to wraith's site) I think I will most likely get the 560. It's starting to look a lot better.
